I'm watching the coverage of Hurricane Florence evacuation orders. I heard one person who practically lives on the beach say she wasn't leaving because she wouldn't be able to get back to check on her house. I heard another, who owned a double wide prefabricated home was already sitting in a shelter, say he doesn't want to be trapped in a maybe damaged house with no power and no running water for a couple of weeks.

I'd be long gone already. What would you do?

If you've got public schools paid for by taxpayers, you're in a socialist nation. If you have public roads paid for by taxpayers, socialist nation. If you've got public defense (police, fire, military, coast guard) paid for by tax dollars, socialist nation. If you're in a nation that has nationalized or localized delivery of services that are not paid for by users alone, you're in a socialist nation- the only question is how socialist. As I see it, we have the military pay to protecting the shipping lanes for our fuel needs which makes up very socialist. In a capitalist nation, the people supplying the oil would pay for their own defense force.

If I left I would evacuate. If I stayed and the storm hit I'd also "evacuate" but with the word having a VERY different meaning.

I'd probably evacuate. With storms you never know what they'll do. And with our current administration, if local help was over-whelmed, there is no way to know when/if help would arrive. Heck of a job, Donnie.

With fires, you know where they are, and how the wind is blowing. Sometimes you go, other times you don't. But stay ready and keep a very close eye on things.

If I were on the Carolina coast, or in a flood-prone area, hell to the YEAH I’m outta there. There’s not much to those barrier islands AT ALL.

FTR, Dear Daughter’s college campus, about 150 miles inland, called off classes for the rest of the week. The campus is on fairly high ground. I told her to stay put, barring a long-term power outage on campus, in which case there’s a standing invitation from nearby family of a roommate.

The town will be overflowing with evacuees, I expect.

I'd still evacuate, but I'd worry about leaving people in charge who are working as clandestine support for ICE.

By nature's "design" the barrier islands are temporary. They grow, they shrink, they come, they go, they breach, they close, and they move sometimes by miles. The fact that we're placing billions upon billions of dollars worth of buildings on them is insane. And this is just one reason why the U.S. gov't has to get out of the flood insurance business. Sure not all at once but the program needs to start turning off and let "the market" rather than the taxpayer handle the cost of the risk.

Unless a Dumpster property gets ravaged. Imagine how much federal effort there would be for Mar-a-Lago. It would be the only time he has empathy for victims, if that includes himself. Of course, he could helicopter in and start throwing paper towels to his immigrant help, to hasten the cleanup.

What are the odds that he'd throw the rebuild project to Ryan Zinke's buddy owned two-person company with no experience?

The third sentence on is something I've railed about for ages. At least coastal NC didn't go the South Flori-DUH route when it came to development. Whoever gets holding the "hot potato" that is the collection of beachfront high-rises from Miami Beach north to West Palm...

[1]At the bottom of the market, we briefly threw around the idea of getting some coastal property to our east. One thing I wanted was for any structure to be worth no more than what we could afford to lose outright -- no McMansion on the beach for us.

NOAA's National Data Buoy Center has hourly real-time data available from offshore buoys. The seas right off the coast are over 24' at under 10 seconds (time between wave peaks). That means that these things are like knives they're so steep. I saw on the news today that offshore waves at one point where over 80'. I suspect it was when the strongest northeasterly hurricane winds ran square into the southwesterly flowing Gulf Stream. It's pretty scary out there.

I would have absolutely evacuated, for as long as it took. But then, we can carry our jobs with us, can afford lodging etc. Not a huge disruption for us.

Not everybody is in that position, and I sometimes wonder- those who stay: How many of those decisions are based on sheer arrogance/ignorance, and how many are made with economics in mind.

--- On September 17, 1787, as Benjamin Franklin was leaving the deliberations of the Constitutional Convention, at Independence Hall, in Philadelphia, a woman called out to him, saying, “Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?”
“A republic,” Franklin said, “if you can keep it.”
