I guess it sucks having to face the system of obstruction you yourself created, eh Mitchie?

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is dangling the threat of canceling the Senate’s August recess to pressure Democrats eager to get back to their hometown campaign trails, on key votes, according to a Wednesday Politico report.

McConnell is reportedly planning to meet with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and President Donald Trump to see if he can negotiate with Schumer to get nominees confirmed and a spending bill passed in exchange for a ceasefire from Trump in attacking the Senate and it’s four-week break.

Sixteen Republican senators signed a letter last week urging McConnell to cancel the recess to force Democrats’ hand. They say that they want to forego the break to get work done amid “historic obstruction” from the Democrats.

However, the fact that ten Democrats are up for reelection this year in states won by Trump certainly factors in. Only one Republican, Sen. Dean Heller (R-NV), is up in a state won by Hillary Clinton in 2016.

McConnell pulled the trigger to get open positions for judges (which he created) filled.

Quote

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has just canceled most of the August recess, with the goal of confirming more of President Donald Trump’s judicial nominees.

Trump, thanks to the right wing think tanks, supporters in the Senate, and especially McConnell, have been extraordinarily successful at filling openings on the federal bench. Today one in eight judges is a Trump appointee. And many of them hold disturbing, right wing extremist positions.

McConnell is nothing if not strategic.

“Democrats are defending 26 seats, including two independent seats in Maine and Vermont, while Republicans have nine on the ballot,” in the upcoming midterms, The Washington Post notes.

That leaves Democratic Senators with a conundrum.

“Attend to Senate business during time they could otherwise use to campaign back home or remain in their states and face criticism that they are shirking their responsibilities in government.”

He's going to retaliate by not allowing a hearing for the next Trump SCOTUS nominee.

I think it's possible that McConnell is as nervous to send his GOPers back home as he is of the Democrats. If he doesn't have his contingent in DC, then they're home speaking with "real people" as well as "real $$$". That's a bit of a crap shoot. In DC, Focus your members on the agenda and talking points you want, get the media appearances etc. Stay on-point and on message. But keep them "locked up". Not to really do anything, but to keep control of anybody who may go home, see the writing on their own election wall, and actually listen to their communities...

We have an electorate that is very polarized. They don't know each other, as colleagues or even as adversaries. The bubble membrane is becoming increasingly hard to puncture. I think there's a leader or two on the Hill who know this and would like to change it.

“A republic,” Franklin said, “if you can keep it.”

But Traveler, "both sides do it." Let's see, Clinton had about 100 nominees blocked, W ultimately had 10 blocked, and Obama had everything blocked until Reid changed the rules plus McConnell stole a SCOTUS seat. Yep, exactly the same.
