Pence is clearly a religious freak with a lot of hate for gays in his heart. (Yeah, yeah. He hates the sin but loves the sinner. Add that to his list of lies.) He just released a book about a day in the life of the Vice President as seen by his pet rabbit, Marlon Bundo. Oliver's program produced a competing book also from Marlon Bundo's standpoint but where he falls in love with another boy bunny. All proceeds are going to charity.

Quote

On Sunday night, John Oliver trolled the heck out of Vice President Mike Pence—or “whatever the exact opposite of a ‘silver fox’ is.”

On Monday, the vice president’s family will be releasing Marlon Bundo’s Day in the Life of the Vice President, a children’s book told from the perspective of their pet rabbit, Marlon Bundo. And so, as a “fuck you” to Pence, the British comedian decided to release his own Marlon Bundo children’s book Sunday night.

“It turns out, in a complete coincidence, we also wrote a book about Mike Pence’s rabbit that is also being published. In fact, while his is out tomorrow, ours is being released right now,” Oliver announced on his HBO program.

While Pence’s book was written by Pence’s daughter Charlotte and illustrated by his wife, Karen, Oliver’s, titled A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo, is written by Last Week Tonight writer Jill Twiss and illustrated by E.G. Keller, an artist based in Pence’s home state of Indiana.

“Now, there are a few small differences between the two books,” said Oliver. “You’ll notice right away that our rabbit has a bow tie, so there’s that. Also, our story is about Marlon Bundo falling in love with another boy rabbit, because our Marlon Bundo is gay—just like the real Marlon Bundo.”

Yes, Oliver’s team crafted a gay love story for children featuring Pence’s pet rabbit in order to get under the VP’s skin, given the politician’s history of promoting anti-LGBT policies.

I love this quote:

Quote

Please buy it for your children. Buy it for any child you know. Or just buy it because you know it would annoy Mike Pence. You'd be doing a nice thing in a really dickish way. And isn't that the dream at the end of the day?

So if Marlon Bundo is gay, does that make it ok for him to have a meal of carrot greens with a girl rabbit?

"Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time - when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers arc in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.

If you've got public schools paid for by taxpayers, you're in a socialist nation. If you have public roads paid for by taxpayers, socialist nation. If you've got public defense (police, fire, military, coast guard) paid for by tax dollars, socialist nation. If you're in a nation that has nationalized or localized delivery of services that are not paid for by users alone, you're in a socialist nation- the only question is how socialist. As I see it, we have the military pay to protecting the shipping lanes for our fuel needs which makes up very socialist. In a capitalist nation, the people supplying the oil would pay for their own defense force.

John Oliver's book went on sale late Sunday night and sold out by Tuesday. He found out it was Amazon's best seller when appearing on Ellen DeGeneres's show. I suspect her saying she thought it was great will propel sales even further.

Quote

Oliver's book is the No. 1 best-seller on Amazon.com as of Tuesday, which came as a surprise even to the author.

"It is?" Oliver responded with a laugh when DeGeneres told him that his book was No. 1.

He then explained that his book has actually sold out because "We were not anticipating people really buying it."

"But they're doing a reprint, so you can still buy it," Oliver said. "It'll take a few weeks."

Charlotte Pence is cool with Oliver's version of the book.

Quote

As of Tuesday morning, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Presents a Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo is still out-selling Marlon Bundo's Day in the Life of the Vice President by Charlotte Pence on Amazon’s best-seller list. And the vice president’s daughter seems totally chill about it.

Charlotte and her mother Karen Pence were on Fox Business Network with Maria Bartiromo to promote their new book when the host casually brought up the fact that Oliver’s parody book about a gay bunny—revealed on his HBO show Sunday night—had just knocked James Comey’s upcoming memoir off of Amazon’s top spot.

“I mean, I think you know, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery in a way,” Charlotte said. “But also, in all seriousness, his book is contributing to charities that I think we can all get behind. We have two books giving to charities that are about bunnies so I’m all for it really.”

Karen Pence stayed notably silent on the matter. But later, Charlotte Pence retweeted the Fox Business clip of her positive reaction to Oliver’s book.

Her comments deviate dramatically from the statement put out by her book’s publisher. “It’s unfortunate that anyone would feel the need to ridicule an educational children’s book and turn it into something controversial and partisan,” a spokesperson for Regnery Publishing told CNN on Monday.

Of course I can't imagine her father, a man who clearly still believes in gay conversion "therapy", getting behind the charities Oliver selected.

Charlotte Pence is far better at PR than her parents or her publisher is.

Maybe she's just a decent human being ... as compared to her father.

I'll answer that with a quote: “let sleeping dogs lie” was a favorite of Sir Robert Walpole, the first Prime Minister of Great Britain. He used it when referring to the "American colonies". (Don't stir up trouble.)

What many people throughout history forget, if you simply leave the situation alone it will die a natural death from indifference.

If Oliver is smart, (and I am quite sure he is) he'll simply ignore that statement and keep plugging the book. If he really wanted to tweak VP Pence, he could buy a bunch of the Pence books and donate them along with his book to various children's hospitals.

The initial run was "only" 180,000 copies (plus digital downloads). It hit #1 on Amazon in just 24 hours.

When John Oliver announced the release of his own parody version of a new children’s book about the Pence family’s pet bunny, Marlon Bundo, even he didn’t think it would reach the top of Amazon’s best-seller list in the first 24 hours. And yet there it sits, ahead of not just Charlotte Pence’s book but also James Comey’s new memoir.

“I have no beef with his bunny,” Oliver told Seth Meyers on a victory lap of sorts Tuesday night. “The beef comes in regarding Michael Pence, who has a history of, let’s say, homophobic views.” He then added, “I just sounded like I was talking around it, but I was actually just saying the word of the thing that he emphatically is: a homophobe.”

When Meyers brought up the overwhelming success of the book, the proceeds of which are going to charities that benefit LGBTQ youth and AIDS research, Oliver revealed that just before the Late Night taping, he had received the latest sales numbers. “I’m sure HBO would find it absolutely hilarious they’re getting no money out of this,” he said.

Per USA Today the Marlon Bundo book promoted by John Oliver slid to the #2 best seller in America last week but made it back to #1 this week. Publisher's Weekly had the same rankings and reported over 288,000 copies sold so far, more than 100,000 beyond their initial printing. (No links since they change weekly so they'll be out of date soon.) Here's how it has fared over the weeks.

It fell behind in those early weeks because they ran out of books within two days. Meanwhile the Pence book is nowhere to be found on either of these lists despite the USA Today list going all the way down to #150. Amazon does have the Pence book labeled as a "Best Seller" ... in the "Children's United States Biographies" category. I guess anybody can win an award if you just narrow down your pool of competition sufficiently but it sure smells like a participation trophy.

I'm guessing that a lot of people didn't want to wait for the book (took four weeks for ours to arrive) and they either cancelled or decided not to purchase at the time.
