Another day, another Republican, another abortion bill. It's their political gift that keeps on giving.

Quote

Republican lawmakers in Ohio proposed again on Monday one of the most restrictive abortion measures in the nation, and this time around, they have the governor’s support.

New Republican Gov. Mike DeWine has indicated he would sign the so-called heartbeat bill that was twice vetoed by his GOP predecessor.

The measure would ban abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detected. That can be as early as six weeks into pregnancy, before many women know they’re pregnant.

The GOP-led Ohio Legislature passed such a bill twice but didn’t have enough votes to overcome vetoes in 2016 and 2018 by then-Gov. John Kasich, a Republican who signed 21 other abortion-limiting proposals into law.

Kasich said that enacting the heartbeat bill would lead the state into a costly court battle and that the measure would likely be struck down as unconstitutional.

Sessions

I can come up with 5 of my peers who miscarried after a heartbeat was detected. I don't know what medical studies show, but I wouldn't assume a pregnancy will go to term until after the 1st trimester

They should have been prosecuted, and perhaps soon others like them will be.

I think Pence once supported a bill in Indiana that required some sort of death certificate or official doctor notification of a miscarriage. It led to a social media campaign wherein women sent messages to him to let them know of their unusually heavy menstruations and other pertinent information.

These people have odd ways of dealing with miscarriages and infant death. I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed to do that but it clearly shows their state of mind when this is their reaction to fetuses and infants compared to mind-numbing numbers of deaths of adults which don't seem to bother them in the least. They are certainly not "pro-life."

Quote

Fox News contributor Alan Colmes brought Rick Santorum and his wife to tears Monday when he criticized their unusual reaction to the death of their infant son, Gabriel, in 1996. The Santorums brought the baby home with them after he lived only a couple of hours.

In discussing the events, Colmes said that they "played with it for a couple of hours so his other children would know that the child was real." Santorum and his wife both broke down sobbing when asked to respond, and, amid a storm of conservative outrage, Colmes called them to apologize for his “hurtful comment.”

Even if you think Colmes crossed the line, you have to admit the Santorums taking their dead child home to be “introduced” to their three living children is pretty bizarre. (The story of the incident seems to have originated in the candidate's wife Karen’s book, Letters to Gabriel.)

Considering Santorum’s hardline Catholic views on abortion (he favors the criminalization of all abortion and supports states’ rights to ban contraception), it’s tempting to read the anecdote through the lens of the pro-life movement’s morbid fetishization of the fetus, from plastic embryos to grisly posters and billboards designed to show that fetuses are human beings.

It’s hard not to compare it to the Duggar family, of the reality show 19 Kids and Counting, who showed images of their miscarried 20th child on a large screen at the baby’s funeral.

Born again Trump suddenly now cares sooooo much about the abortion issue.(I guess he's not expecting any future mistress to need one. Ba-ZING-gah!)

Quote

President Donald Trump spotted Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) in the White House’s Blue Room at the National Prayer Breakfast last week and got “in his face” about the abortion issue currently being debated in New York and Virginia.

“He saw a Democrat in the room, a Democrat who’s known to be a person of faith, and he was like, ‘Why aren’t you speaking out about this?’” a source told Politico. Coons is a devout Presbyterian.

Trump, who once called himself “very pro-choice,” has turned to this issue to deflect from his myriad recent political losses (including a likely concession on the border wall) and, some sources told Politico, due to a true growing conviction on the subject.

The White House has been trying to woo back Evangelical voters, many of whom see abortion as the crowning political issue.

New York and Virginia are considering allowing women to have late-term abortions if the labor would imperil their “health” in the former or “mental or physical health” in the latter. The state legislation is widely seen as a reaction to codify abortion rights under threat by a Trump-molded judiciary.

Trump and his Christianists still can't, or just flat out refuse to, understand reality. I really believe they don't really care about effectively cutting the number of abortions. They just get off on telling people what to do.

Quote

ulfilling Republican efforts to “defund Planned Parenthood,” the Trump administration announced on Feb. 22 it would end federal funding to health providers that perform abortions.

This new ruling is the domestic version of the “global gag rule” that Trump imposed in 2017. It cuts U.S. global health funding from organizations abroad that perform – or even talk about – abortions, including the International Planned Parenthood Federation.

First implemented under Ronald Reagan in 1984, the global gag rule has been rescinded by every Democrat and reinstated by every Republican to occupy the Oval Office, reflecting the partisan nature of abortion.

Supporters of the global gag rule say defunding abortion providers will reduce abortions. However, researchers from Stanford University in 2011 found that this U.S. policy actually made women in sub-Saharan Africa twice as likely to have an abortion.

My new study, published in November 2018, confirms those findings in Africa and shows that the global gag rule had an even greater effect in Latin America.

Analyzing abortion data from 51 developing countries between 2001 and 2008 – which encompassed the reproductive decisions of about 6.3 million women – I found that women in Latin America were three times more likely to have an abortion while the global gag rule was in effect.

Twenty states rise up against Trump's attack on abortion rights.

Quote

California and several other Democratic-led states announced they were challenging the Trump administration’s effort to set up obstacles for women seeking abortions, including barring taxpayer-funded family planning clinics from referring patients to abortion providers.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced Monday that the state filed a federal lawsuit in San Francisco that aims to block a new family planning rule from the U.S. Health and Human Services Department. The rule shifts millions of dollars from Planned Parenthood to faith-based family planning organizations.

Washington, D.C., and 19 states said they would sue separately in Oregon on Tuesday. The states are: Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Washington’s Democratic attorney general also previously said the state would challenge the rule.

This is an example of the kind of justices you can expect from Republicans. Remember that just as happened going from Clinton to Bush many of these vacancies were created by the Republicans to pack the courts when they gained power, something they're doing very efficiently. And if you hate this but didn't vote for Clinton well what can I say? It's your fault.

Quote

An Alabama probate court is allowing a man to sue on behalf of an aborted fetus, in what his lawyer claims is the first case of its kind in the country.

Ryan Magers of Madison County, Alabama, says in court papers that his girlfriend, who was six weeks pregnant at the time, had a medication abortion against his wishes in February 2017.

This January, with the help of an anti-abortion group, Magers filed a petition to serve as the “personal representative” of the aborted fetus’ estate.

A month later, he sued the clinic that performed the abortion, the Alabama Women’s Center for Reproductive Alternatives in Huntsville, on behalf of himself and “Baby Roe,” as the fetus is referred to in court documents.

On Tuesday, Madison County Probate Judge Frank Barger granted Magers’ petition to represent the estate in a decision his attorney, Brent Helms, said broke new legal ground.

"This is the first estate that I'm aware of that has ever been opened for an aborted baby," Helms told local ABC affiliate WAAY 31. "We are confident, and this is a step in the right direction.”

The decision also drew outcry from abortion rights activists around the country, including NARAL President Ilyse Hogue, who called it a “very scary case.”

“This is the logical consequence of all anti-abortion activity,” tweeted Erin Matson, founder of Reproaction. “Fetuses are treated like people and women and people who can become pregnant are not.”

All abortion all the time. Other than rigging elections and taking away anything that might help the people in their states that seems to be the entirety of their "policy".

Quote

Georgia and Tennessee joined a string of states moving to enact tough abortion restrictions when Republican House lawmakers passed bans on most abortions after a fetal heartbeat can be detected.

During a tense debate in Atlanta on Thursday, several Democratic lawmakers opposed to the bill turned their backs to its author, Republican Rep. Ed Setzler. Earlier in the day, some Democratic lawmakers brought in wire coat hangers in reference to unsafe home abortions.

Setzler said his bill “seeks to recognize that the child in the womb, that is living distinct from their mother, has a right to life that is worthy of legal protection.”

The Tennessee House passed similar legislation earlier Thursday after its Republican supermajority forced an end to debate without letting some Democrats speak. Several other states including Mississippi, Florida, Kentucky, Ohio and South Carolina are also considering this type of legislation.

If the measures in Georgia and Tennessee win Senate approval and are signed into law, they would trigger immediate legal challenges.

Abortion opponents across the country are hopeful the U.S. Supreme Court — with new Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh — will either reverse Roe v. Wade, or uphold specific state laws that could undermine the court’s 1973 ruling establishing the right of women to abort a fetus that can’t survive outside the womb.

A new women's clinic is opening in Texass. They won't provide abortion or condoms. They will provide ovulation calendars ("What do you call a couple who practices the rhythm method? Parents.") and plastic surgery. And you can bet Trump will do everything to give them federal funds. Once again they prove the real Christianist view on women's reproduction; no birth control and we gotta' keep your body looking good so you're man isn't "forced" to stray.

Quote

A former crisis pregnancy center operating out of Texas is rebranding itself along the lines of Planned Parenthood — but without offering abortion or condoms, reports Jezebel. The goal is to secure federal funding, while promoting a subtle anti-abortion message.

Obria claims to provide a holistic approach to women’s health, offering ovulation calendars and a plastic surgeon for “the full mommy makeover.” But unlike Planned Parenthood, they refuse abortions. Their mission statement reads that they are “being led by God” and “support for marriage and family.”

The lying right-wing scumbags who created and released the highly edited videos of a Planned Parenthood meeting over fetal tissue are going to court because SCOTUS just ruled against them. Turns out they also violated California state law. LOCK THEM UP! LOCK THEM UP!

Quote

The Supreme Court is rejecting an appeal from an anti-abortion group that surreptitiously recorded Planned Parenthood employees.

The justices joined lower courts Monday in allowing Planned Parenthood’s racketeering and other claims against the Center for Medical Progress to proceed.

Two members of the group also are facing criminal charges in California over the secret recordings.

Alabama. Nuff' said. With Republican packing of the courts I don't see the right to an abortion surviving in the U.S.

Quote

Alabama lawmakers are proposing to outlaw almost all abortions as conservatives take aim at the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.

Alabama lawmakers on Tuesday will introduce legislation to make it a felony to perform an abortion at any stage of pregnancy unless the mother’s health is in jeopardy. If enacted, it would be the most restrictive in the country and certain to be challenged in court.

Emboldened by new conservatives on the Supreme Court, abortion opponents in multiple states are seeking to ignite new legal fights to challenge Roe v. Wade.

Kentucky and Mississippi approved abortion bans once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which happens at about six weeks.

Georgia’s governor is considering a similar bill. South Carolina lawmakers are also considering fetal heartbeat legislation.

Roberts went into contortions to save the ACA, directly contradicting a previous ruling of his. Only when he sees the court veering over the edge does he change his spots.
