Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is turning the Senate toward a fight over abortion next week.

McConnell moved to bring up a 20-week abortion ban, paving the way for a procedural vote expected on Monday.

"Now Congress has an opportunity to take a step forward. ... I'm pleased to have filed cloture on this bill to protect unborn children who are capable of feeling pain. ... And I look forward to voting for it early next week," McConnell said.

The legislation, from GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.), would make it illegal for any person to perform or attempt an abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, with the possible penalty of five years in prison, fines or both.

Republicans will need 60 votes to overcome a procedural hurdle before they can take up the bill.
With a 51-seat majority, they are expected to fall short. The bill has 45 co-sponsors — all Republicans.

The vote comes after President Trump urged the Senate to take up the abortion ban legislation.

"I call upon the Senate to pass this important law and send it to my desk for signing," Trump said in his address to the March for Life, an annual march against abortion in Washington, D.C.

" 'Individual conscience' means that women only get contraceptives if their employers, their physicians, their pharmacists, their husbands and/or fathers, pastors, and possibly their mayors, Governors, State Secretaries of Health, Congressmen, Senators, and President all agree that in that particular case they're justifiable." --D.C. Sessions

"That's the problem with being implacable foes - no one has any incentive to treat you as anything more than an obstacle to be overcome."

Just as DC said the other day, abortion will remain legal. It's too good a weapon for the GOP to lose.

Abortion has been the "Squirrel!!!!" call for the GOP for decades.

My guess is that if a GOP controlled Supreme Court ever overturned Roe, it would unleash a women's march uprising like never before. So the party leaders are happy to keep using this culture war battle as bait for as long as possible.

More to the point, why should the Base get worked up? They won.

If they ever manage to override Roe-Wade, their next goal will be making contraception illegal. I don’t know it will be as easy to drum up support as “stopping the murder of the babies!!!!!!!”, but they will try.

Do they really want the people who voted for Obama to start having more babies?

They don't so much want to increase the (brown) birthrate as to have a new "war on (dark-skinned people who use) drugs."

Abortifacients. They're already classifying certain contraceptives as such. The focus will shift to the fertilized egg.

It's already a big workaround for the majorly anti-abortion States. The main ones are OTC in Mexico and Canada, and since they're legal (if restricted) in the US, there isn't a big search at the border like there would be for other drugs. Once they're in New Mexico, there's really no way to stop them from getting to Arizona, Texas, and the rest of the theocratic South.

Iowa Republicans are on track to deliver on this issue with one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the nation.

Quote

The Iowa House of Representatives approved a measure late Tuesday night banning nearly all abortions in the state. Senate File 359—which bans most abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected—was approved on a 51-46 vote. To win support, the House’s strongest anti-abortion Republicans made concessions that allowed exceptions for some victims of rape or incest. “There were [originally] so many restrictions on the mother’s decision. It troubled me because it was just too restrictive,” said Rep. Dave Heaton. “And now we’ve loosened it up [creating exceptions for] incest, rape, the life of the mother, fetal anomaly. It’s enough for me to get on board.” Democrats said the new exemptions do little to moderate the measure they called “frightening,” “unconstitutional,” and “extreme.”

If the POG could just somehow get guns to fetuses, they could combine their two obsessions.

I've gotten very cynical about the issue. Despite 30+ years of anti Roe V Wade, there have been very few efforts to pass Federal laws that would negate Roe V Wade. All they have left is an "Amendment". (We all know how well the 18th worked...)

My take is they will never get rid of a guaranteed cash and vote getter.
Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.

If you've got public schools paid for by taxpayers, you're in a socialist nation. If you have public roads paid for by taxpayers, socialist nation. If you've got public defense (police, fire, military, coast guard) paid for by tax dollars, socialist nation. If you're in a nation that has nationalized or localized delivery of services that are not paid for by users alone, you're in a socialist nation- the only question is how socialist. As I see it, we have the military pay to protecting the shipping lanes for our fuel needs which makes up very socialist. In a capitalist nation, the people supplying the oil would pay for their own defense force.

Oh, it's long been a fantasy in the forced-birth camp that a fetus could gun down a physician performing an abortion. Finding a way to booby-trap a fetus is the one area of gun research they would probably fund.

Actually this would be their ideal
