Quote

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Wednesday said House Republicans will aim to cut spending on Medicare, Medicaid and welfare programs next year as a way to trim the federal deficit.

“We’re going to have to get back next year at entitlement reform, which is how you tackle the debt and the deficit,”

“Trump’s a stupid man’s idea of a smart person, a poor man’s idea of a rich person & a weak man’s idea of a strong man.”

— Fran Lebowitz

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It's simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.”

— Carl Sagan

Pray for Trump: Psalm 109:8

"Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time - when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers arc in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.

Paul Ryan is a duplicitous, disgusting human. Nearly his entire personal life (free of medical debt!) , and certainly his education and his professional life, is courtesy of a variety of entitlement programs. One of the most important moments in our modern political history. He's on the wrong side.

--- On September 17, 1787, as Benjamin Franklin was leaving the deliberations of the Constitutional Convention, at Independence Hall, in Philadelphia, a woman called out to him, saying, “Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?”
“A republic,” Franklin said, “if you can keep it.”

He's a Randian which means he's a true believer. That's all you need to know to understand his actions. What he got he deserved as compared to all those other takers. He has no problem keeping these two things in his head at the same time. His personal self worth depends upon him doing so.

Ryan and his ilk make distinctions between people like him using those benefits to make something of themselves v those takers who sit around cashing welfare and disability checks, sucking down food stamps, and generally doing nothing. I find that to show a singular lack of humility and gratitude for the help he and his were given. Yeah they worked too but sometimes work alone is not enough when you lack the starter cash.

Yeah, because he's accomplished so much economically in his life. His many companies have created jobs and added to the GDP. His business brilliance has brought great strength to the U.S. It's not like he's a resource sucking government worker, right?

(AnBr, now that Ryan is gone it might be time to retitle this thread to something like "The Republican War on the Social Safety Net.")

Trump said it out loud. They want to cut self-funding government programs to pay for their tax cuts for the wealthy. Sure he didn't say it exactly like that but you'd have to be either an idiot or incredibly ignorant not to understand it. If the Dems don't campaign on this loud and proud then they're beyond feckless. It's a no-lose attack. Republicans either have to own it, mealy mouth it (which would open them up to further savaging), or buck Trump and his MAGAts.

Quote

President Donald Trump said he intends to cut entitlement programs during a town hall forum in Pennsylvania on Thursday night.

When Fox News host Martha MacCallum suggested that if “you don’t cut something in entitlements, you will never really deal with the debt,” Trump jumped in right away.

“Oh, we’ll be cutting,” he said to an audience in Scranton. “We’re also going to have growth like you’ve never seen before.”

The move would represent a change of direction, as Trump has generally maintained that he does not intend to trim such programs. In a tweet last month, he wrote: “We will not be touching your Social Security and Medicare in Fiscal 2021 Budget.”

He has occasionally walked back similar comments on cutting entitlements. At the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, for example, the president was asked by a moderator how he would handle federal entitlement programs. He responded by saying “at some point they will be” on the chopping block. In a follow up question, when he was asked about Medicare, in particular, Trump said “we’re going to look” at it. In the following months, the president never attempted to enact cuts.

In the midst of the Democratic primary, Trump’s remarks could receive particular attention for another reason: the location in which he delivered them. Pennsylvania, one of the most consequential battlegrounds of the general election, is a top target for Democrats looking to defeat Trump in the state scored a victory against Hillary Clinton in 2016. It’s also the home state of former Vice President Joe Biden, a favorite punching bag of the president, who is surging as the 2020 frontrunner after a series of Super Tuesday wins.
