Mike Pompeo just effectively announced that Israel's settlements in the West Bank are legal, at least in the eyes of the Trump administration.

Quote

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Monday afternoon that the United States is rebuking the State Department’s own 1978 legal opinion that Israel’s settlements in the occupied West Bank territories are “inconsistent with international law.”

“Calling the establishment of civilian settlements inconsistent with international law has not advanced the cause of peace,” Pompeo said in a speech that is likely to anger Palestinians. “The hard truth is that there will never be a judicial resolution to the conflict, and arguments about who is right and who is wrong as a matter of international law will not bring peace.”

And he thinks declaring the settlements legal will advance peace? Sort of telling the Palestinians to just get over it?

Netanyahu has been indicted.

Quote

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been indicted on several charges, including bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. The indictment is the result of a long-running corruption case investigating the 70-year-old’s alleged practice of giving lucrative official favors to media tycoons in exchange for favorable coverage and high-dollar gifts. Netanyahu is the longest-serving prime minister in the country’s history. He has denied the charges, claiming they were politically motivated. Netanyahu is not legally required to step down over the indictment.

Sound familiar?

Quote

After months of suspense, Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving premier, was charged with bribery, fraud and breach of trust by Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit.

Netanyahu immediately hit back with an often vitriolic 15-minute speech, accusing the judiciary, police and others of plotting against him with “false” and “politically motivated” allegations.

“What is going on here is an attempt to stage a coup against the prime minister,” he charged in a televised speech.

“The object of the investigations was to oust the right from government.”

He vowed to continue on as interim prime minister despite potential court dates and intense political pressure.

“I will continue to lead this country, according to the letter of the law,” he said.

My how the wingnuts pivot. Remember when you weren't racist for hating Mexicans because that wasn't a race? Well now being Israeli is a "race" in Trump's GOP and anything they do like, say, steal land hand over fist from the Palestinians must be accepted. OBEY!

Quote

esident Trump is expected to sign an executive order that will effectively put a chill on BDS (Boycott Divestment Sanction) campaigns or any other campus protests against Israel’s treatment of Palestinians, illegal settlements, or U.S.-Israel foreign policy.

As The New York Times reported last night:

Quote

The order will effectively interpret Judaism as a race or nationality, not just a religion, to prompt a federal law penalizing colleges and universities deemed to be shirking their responsibility to foster an open climate for minority students.

Currently, Title VI prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color and national origin. By declaring Judaism a nationality rather than religion, it puts it under the rubric of federal protection, unlocking all sorts of tools for the school to shut down speech. As of this writing, however, Jewish Insider claims to have a copy of the executive order and says, contra to the NYT, there is no mention of national origin in it.

Nevertheless, the order as being reported will allow the federal government to force schools to restrict protests and monitor speech and curriculum in the classroom. For example, if there is an active BDS organization on campus or ongoing protest against the lockdown of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, it might be deemed anti-Semitic and the Department of Education could threaten a withdrawal of financial assistance to the school. This goes, perhaps more importantly, to courses and professors that are accused of being “anti-Semitic.” We can see where this is going. From the Jerusalem Post:

Quote

A senior administration official said on Tuesday that antisemitism on campuses is often hidden in an anti-Israel agenda. If campuses that receive money from the government adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism in cases of discrimination, students who will feel that they are being bullied on college campuses would be able to complain to their institution’s administration, who will then need to decide if the incident is considered antisemitic.

Trump’s order would make the IHRA (International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance) definition of anti-Semitism the official guideline for Title VI. But the IHRA is hotly disputed. The State Department has adopted it but critics say it is too vague and all-encompassing, and can be a trap for honest critics of Israel’s domestic and foreign policies. For example, it describes as anti-Semitic “denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination” under some circumstances, and offers as an example of such behavior “claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor.”

The White House’s latest move, if fulfilled, is a huge victory for pro-Israel organizations here in the United States that, according to Forward magazine has been funneling tens of millions of dollars into combating constitutionally protected boycotts on school campuses and in American states.

What about the "good people on both sides" after a demonstration that featured "Jews will not replace us" as a chant? Some of those good people will be upset by this order.

They're not on a college campus so all is cool. It's only speech on college campuses that support the Palestinian's right to not have their land stolen that must be suppressed.

Trump created a Middle East peace plan with no input from the Palestinians who, predictably, rejected it. What a doofus move. I can't even begin to imagine what the Downtown Douchebag thought he's accomplish by floating a plan destined to die immediately. That last sentence I quoted is a real beaut.

Quote

Palestinian leaders on Tuesday rejected US President Donald Trump’s peace proposal as an unacceptable capitulation to Israel that tramples on the long-standing aspirations of their people.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas vowed the initiative unveiled in Washington would fail.

“This conspiracy deal will not pass. Our people will take it to the dustbin of history,” he said after a meeting in the West Bank city of Ramallah of various Palestinian factions including Islamist group Hamas, which pledged to “resist the deal in all its forms”.

Trump’s proposal included a long list of measures directly in line with Israeli interests, notably recognition of Jerusalem as the “undivided capital” of the Jewish state.

Exactly. I suspect in the past his modus operandi of piling new distractions on top of old was usually strategic. These days, it is hard to say if that is still always the case, if it is spinal reflex, or at times simply the unavoidable end result of degenerating mental faculties. In this particular case it was pretty clearly deliberate, but to be successful with such a maneuver you have to make the new distractions equivalent or greater in magnitude than the old, and to trump (heh) his own impeachment the President would probably have to shoot Mike Pence on Fifth Avenue.

Even if this were the Best of All Possible Peace Plans, created by Dr. Pangloss himself, it's not at all clear that a U.S. President who's being impeached and whose term ends in less than a year, and an Israeli Prime Minister who's under indictment and whose tenure is in limbo under a hung Parliament, are credible counterparties in the unlikely event that the Palestinians are completely on board.

But the real audience is Franklin Graham, Jerry Falwell Jr, etc., and their followers. Got to shore up that base support.

More details on "the deal of the century" which basically means the Palestinian get a hacked up homeland because all of the Israeli settlements get to stay. Basically if Israel pushing forward with this then the Palestinians will be f***ed, locked into the current status quo with zero chance of ever becoming a truly independent state.

Quote

Standing beside a beaming and clapping Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump laid out the broad strokes of a plan that would see Israel maintain all of its settlements in the West Bank and control over all of Jerusalem and its holy sites.

A future Palestinian state would encompass roughly 70 percent of the territory of the West Bank, but with it some 15 settlements-cum-enclaves that would dissect the state from north to south (in a map released by the U.S. team the list of 15 sites were termed “not all inclusive”). A Palestinian capital would be placed in “eastern Jerusalem,” in villages beyond the Israeli security barrier; as Trump put it, “Jerusalem will remain Israel’s undivided capital.”

The conditions for Palestinian statehood are almost as long as the cheers from the partisan crowd arrayed at the White House. The Palestinians would have to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, including in its expanded borders, and the Islamist Hamas movement that controls the Gaza Strip would have to be disarmed and Gaza retaken, among many other stipulations. With good reason Netanyahu called it a “historic day,” adding that the “’Deal of the Century’ is the opportunity of the century.”

The Palestinian leadership has made clear since last year, and increasingly in recent days, that the U.S. initiative is “dead on arrival.” Saeb Erekat, secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said earlier today to CNN, prior to the plan’s release, that it wasn’t the “Deal of the Century but the fraud of the century.” A senior Palestinian official close to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told The Daily Beast that Trump was “the American president who unleashed the Greater Israel project and killed the prospects for a two state solution.”

The fact that the Middle East Peace Process now appears to be solely between Americans and Israelis—Netanyahu’s main political rival Benny Gantz met with Trump yesterday—doesn’t seem to have fazed the U.S. administration.

As a refresher here's a map that shows how effectively Israel has installed settlements to cut the Palestinian territory into non-contiguous pieces. It also ensures they don't have access to Jordan, a natural and independent trading partner. So de facto apartheid it is.

Wow, they have no problem saying it out loud.

Quote

David Friedman, who serves as President Donald Trump’s ambassador to Israel, told Christian Broadcasting Network reporter David Brody that President Donald Trump’s new peace plan will restore Israel’s “biblical territory” and open up new opportunities to evangelical tourists by seizing land currently held by Palestinians.

During the interview, Friedman explained to Brody that several historic sites in the Holy Land that are important to evangelical Christians currently can’t be accessed because it’s too “dangerous” for tourists to travel to the occupied territories.

“It’s impossible to get there — they’re completely neglected,” he said of the sites. “Why? Because Israel has not yet retained sovereignty over those territories.”

But that is set to change with the president’s purported “peace plan,” Friedman continued.

“If they do — and our plan contemplates that Israel will — you’re talking about opening up the Bible, bringing it back to life in ways that your listeners could not even have imagined,” he said. “It’s an opportunity for biblical tourism!”

Mission Accomplished!

Quote

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced Saturday that the Palestinian Authority would cut all ties with the U.S. and Israel after rejecting the “peace” plan spearheaded by Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner.

President Donald Trump outlined the heavily pro-Israel proposal while standing alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House last week with no Palestinian representatives present. The plan would create a demilitarized Palestinian state while establishing Jerusalem as Israel’s undivided capital and allowing illegally built Israeli settlements in the West Bank to remain in place.

Abbas, who immediately rejected the proposal, went further while addressing an emergency meeting of the Arab League called in response to the plan.

“We’ve informed the Israeli side . . . that there will be no relations at all with them and the United States, including security ties,” Abbas said Saturday, according to Reuters.

The Palestinians have long cooperated with Israeli forces in policing occupied areas of the West Bank and shared intelligence with the CIA.

Abbas said he refused multiple attempts by Trump to discuss the proposal.

“Trump asked that I speak to him by phone, but I said, ‘No.’ And that he wants to send me a letter . . . but I refused it,” he said, explaining that he did not want Trump to be able to say he consulted the Palestinians in announcing the plan.

The Palestinians ended talks with the Trump administration in 2017 after Trump moved the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and were not involved in crafting Kushner’s plan.

Abbas reiterated his “complete” rejection of the Kushner peace plan Saturday.

“I will not have it recorded in my history that I sold Jerusalem,” he said.

Looks like nobody is happy with the Kushner plan.

Quote

Supporters of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are blaming presidential adviser Jared Kushner for a delay in plans to immediately annex Jewish settlements in the West Bank as envisioned in President Trump's peace plan.

Netanyahu appeared to acquiesce to U.S. pressure Tuesday, saying he would hold off on annexation action until a new government is formed after Israeli elections next month. Kushner and other U.S. officials had sent signals both publicly and privately that Israel should not move too fast to reap what many of Netanyahu's pro-settlement political base saw as the rewards of the plan released last week.

Israeli media has extensively reported grumblings among key Netanyahu backers, with David Elhayani, chairman of the powerful Yesha Council, which oversees more than 150 settlements, accusing Kushner of betraying Netanyahu and not being honest with him.
