Update on our easy to win trade war.

Quote

he Trump administration plans to propose slapping a 25-percent tariff on $200 billion of imported Chinese goods after initially setting them at 10 percent, in a bid to pressure Beijing into making trade concessions, a source familiar with the plan said on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump’s administration said on July 10 it would seek to impose the 10-percent tariffs on thousands of Chinese imports.

They include food products, chemicals, steel and aluminum and consumer goods ranging from dog food, furniture and carpets to car tires, bicycles, baseball gloves and beauty products.

While the tariffs would not be imposed until after a period of public comment, raising the proposed level to 25 percent could escalate the trade dispute between the world’s two biggest economies.

The source said the Trump administration could announce the tougher proposal as early as Wednesday. The plan to more than double the tariff rate was first reported by Bloomberg News.

There was no immediate reaction from the Chinese government. In July it accused the United States of bullying and warned it would hit back.

Investors fear an escalating trade war between Washington and Beijing could hit global growth, and prominent U.S. business groups have condemned Trump’s aggressive tariffs.

Yep, trade wars are easy to win part 5 ... or maybe 7. Maybe if the fake media praised Dear Leader more then the Chinese would crumble before Emperor Trump.

China’s government has announced a $60 billion list of U.S. goods including coffee, honey and industrial chemicals for retaliation if Washington goes ahead with its latest tariff threat.

The Finance Ministry on Friday accused the Trump administration of damaging the global economy after it proposed imposing 25 percent duties on $200 billion of Chinese products in a dispute over Beijing’s technology policy.

A ministry statement said, “China is forced to take countermeasures.”

Cue the music: "Uh, uh, uh. Another one bites the dust!" Thanks, Trump.

manufacturing plant in South Carolina recently announced that it’s completely closing down in large part thanks to President Donald Trump’s tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum.

According to South Carolina’s The State, local manufacturer Element Electronics is laying off 126 employees and is shuttering its plant in the town of Winnsboro, South Carolina.

In particular, the plant said that its closure is due to “new tariffs that were recently and unexpectedly imposed on many goods imported from China, including the key television components used in our assembly operations in Winnsboro.”

I thought Trump was a big fan of Erdogan's. It sounds like they're being specifically targeted and its all over one American pastor accused of being part of an attempt to overthrow Erdogan. I'm not fan of this would-be Islamic authoritarian but this seems to have escalated awfully quickly.

Quote

Donald Trump announced early Friday morning that he was doubling tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminum, raising them to 50 percent and 20 percent, respectively, as international markets were scrambling to deal with that country’s currency meltdown. The lira has taken a hammering over recent days, down 18 percent this week and hitting record lows against the U.S. dollar. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has urged calm and has brushed off the plunging value of the lira, telling Turks: “If they have their dollars, we have our people, our God.” Trump’s move is likely to make the situation significantly worse. As Trump tweeted, Erdogan’s son-in-law/finance minister was reportedly delivering a speech to say the economy is doing well, unaware what the U.S. president had just declared. “I have just authorized a doubling of Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum with respect to Turkey as their currency, the Turkish Lira, slides rapidly downward against our very strong Dollar!” Trump wrote. “Aluminum will now be 20% and Steel 50%. Our relations with Turkey are not good at this time!” Trump and Erdogan are in the middle of a feud over jailed American pastor Andrew Brunson.

Aaaaaah. Now it makes sense. Jay Sekulow is a Christianist darling and one of Trump's personal attorneys.

Quote

And at the center of this international incident is one man: a detained American pastor named Andrew Brunson.

To Turkey, Brunson is a spy who attempted to overthrow the government during a 2016 coup attempt. But to US officials, Brunson is an innocent Christian family man who is being wrongfully detained.

The debate has strained relations between the NATO allies and raised the possibility of significant sanctions and further threats. So who exactly is Brunson, and how did the pastor become a key figure in US-Turkey relations?

Brunson, 50, is a native of North Carolina and an evangelical Presbyterian pastor who worked in Izmir on Turkey's Aegean coast, where he was a pastor at the Izmir Resurrection Church.

He has lived in Turkey for more than 23 years with his wife and three children, according to the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), an organization led by attorney Jay Sekulow that has advocated for his release.

Oh, yeah. And this is what the art of the deal looks like. Basically from 0 to insane in the blink of an eye and filled to the brim with religion because we all know how that helps the situation.

Quote

U.S. President Donald J. Trump, who famously fist-bumped Erdogan during the NATO summit last month, apparently thought he had a deal with the Turkish president. The Washington Post called it “a carom shot” that would free a Turkish woman held in Israel as a trade-off for the release of Brunson.

The woman, Ebru Ozkan, was deported from Israel on July 15. But the deal for Brunson fell apart. He was allowed to move from a Turkish prison to house arrest due to health concerns, yet remains captive. And after what appears to have been an acrimonious phone call between Trump and Erdogan on Thursday morning, as Trump had to recognize another of his deals with foreign leaders was falling apart, things started to get really ugly.

Quote

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump
The United States will impose large sanctions on Turkey for their long time detainment of Pastor Andrew Brunson, a great Christian, family man and wonderful human being. He is suffering greatly. This innocent man of faith should be released immediately!

Experts say that the aftermath of Trump’s “Twitter diplomacy” threatening Erdogan with sanctions reduces the chance Brunson will be coming home any time soon, and makes a tense time in an already complex relationship even worse.

Bulent Aliriza, Director of the Turkey Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, says Erdogan has reacted badly to the tweets and suggests winning Brunson’s freedom is now “less likely than before.” Aliriza also says the Erdogan government is “obviously digging in their heels,” leading to “a very serious deterioration.”

In a move that may have blindsided Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in the midst of delicate negotiations for Brunson’s freedom (there are conflicting reports), Vice President Mike Pence warned Thursday at a conference on religious freedom, which Pompeo was hosting, that Turkey would face significant sanctions if it continued to hold Brunson. Trump followed with his tweet demanding Brunson be freed “immediately.”

Did it never occur to anyone that diplomacy is also an art and a skill honed over years of dealing with foreign governments?

TPM's take on Trump destroying our relationship with Turkey over one Evangelical. This current hissy fit is the behavior of a f***ing child without a clue on how to govern a nation.

If you've got public schools paid for by taxpayers, you're in a socialist nation. If you have public roads paid for by taxpayers, socialist nation. If you've got public defense (police, fire, military, coast guard) paid for by tax dollars, socialist nation. If you're in a nation that has nationalized or localized delivery of services that are not paid for by users alone, you're in a socialist nation- the only question is how socialist. As I see it, we have the military pay to protecting the shipping lanes for our fuel needs which makes up very socialist. In a capitalist nation, the people supplying the oil would pay for their own defense force.

Trump's trade war is impacting Wisconsin politics. Good. Maybe enough people will wake up and grasp the GOP is screwing them bigly.

Quote

Mike North, the head of the Wisconsin Dairy Business Association, is enough of a dyed-in-the-wool Republican to spend his Monday morning at a campaign stop for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker ®. But when asked about how President Trump’s standing might effect his party this year, he immediately expressed concern over Trump’s ongoing trade wars.

“The reality is a change in our marketplace has been discomforting for sure, to say the least. There’s a lot of heartburn about where prices are at right now. So that will be something that we’ll have to work through as we come through fall,” North told TPM at a Walker campaign event at Digman Construction, a small company outside small-town Platteville in the state’s rural southwestern corner.

North’s group is nonpartisan, and has endorsed candidates from both parties in the past. He said he thought most Republican-leaning voters are willing to deal with some short-term economic pain to give Trump some time to figure things out, and doesn’t think it’s fair that others who voted for Trump are now unhappy with him doing what he promised to do.

“You don’t send a bull into a china shop and hope for a whole plate at the end,” North said.

But North admitted that plunging dairy prices, which have dropped 4 percent this year partly because of Mexico’s retaliatory tariffs on dairy in the trade wars Trump has kicked off, have put farmers in a tough position.

“Are we seeing things that we like in the short term? Obviously, lower prices aren’t anything any farmer wants to see. But we’re all looking at this with a very long-term mindset,” he said.

Wisconsin is one of many midwestern states where Trump’s trade war is roiling local industries, and could boost Democrats’ prospects this fall.

And dairy isn’t the only GOP-leaning industry in the state that’s been shaken by Trump’s trade wars. Wisconsin’s corn and soybean farmers aren’t thrilled either, and one iconic Wisconsin company has taken a hit as well. Harley Davidson’s bottom line risks major damage from Trump’s steel tariffs. When the Milwaukee-based company said it will start making its motorcycles for the European market over there to sidestep fallout from Trump’s trade war, the president responded with a call to boycott:

Trump's trade war has caused a massive drop in agricultural exports. I wonder if those dependent on that income are tired of "winning" yet.

Quote

Prices for U.S. farm exports dropped in July by the most in more than six years as a trade war with China heated up, Labor Department figures showed Tuesday.

Agricultural export prices fell 5.3 percent from the prior month, the biggest drop since October 2011, as soybean prices plummeted 14.1 percent. Export prices for corn, wheat, fruits and nuts also slumped in July. The overall export price index dropped 0.5 percent, the most since May 2017, the department said. The figures exclude the price effect from any tariffs.

China in July slapped 25 percent tariffs on American soybeans and also targeted other farm goods in retaliation for U.S. duties on a range of merchandise. The world’s biggest buyer of soybeans has shunned U.S. supplies amid the escalating trade conflict, threatening to curb exports after the harvest.

The report also showed that import prices were unchanged from the previous month, matching the median estimate of economists. Prices were up 4.8 percent from a year earlier, the biggest advance since 2012, driven by a 40.7 percent rise in fuel import prices.
