My wife and I have expanded our interests into dragonflies and damselflies. The more we learn, the more cool stuff we find out. Since the bird thread is working out well, I figure I'd make one for bugs. Before I post anything informative, here's a picture of a Blue Corporal I took a few weeks ago.

Now here's an article about female dragonflies that feign death rather than mate. Interesting tactic but I'm not sure it would work in humans, especially drunken ones.

Quote

Female dragonflies use an extreme tactic to get rid of unwanted suitors: they drop out the sky and then pretend to be dead.

Rassim Khelifa from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, witnessed the behaviour for the first time in the moorland hawker dragonfly (Aeshna juncea). While collecting their larvae in the Swiss Alps, he watched a female crash-dive to the ground while being pursued by a male.

The female then lay motionless on her back. Her suitor soon flew away, and the female took off once the coast was clear.

“I was surprised,” says Khelifa, who had never previously seen this in 10 years of studying dragonflies.

Correct: all some females have to do is have a headache.

If you've got public schools paid for by taxpayers, you're in a socialist nation. If you have public roads paid for by taxpayers, socialist nation. If you've got public defense (police, fire, military, coast guard) paid for by tax dollars, socialist nation. If you're in a nation that has nationalized or localized delivery of services that are not paid for by users alone, you're in a socialist nation- the only question is how socialist. As I see it, we pay the military pay to protect the shipping lanes for our fuel needs which makes us very socialist. In a capitalist nation, the people supplying the oil would pay for their own defense force.

Here's a slow motion video that shows the details of just how a dragonfly actually uses its wings.

The wings of most dragonflies dry out, become set, and aren't actually living, much like fingernails. There's one amazing species that actually has living wings.

Quote

An adult insect wing is basically dead.

So what in the world were tiny respiratory channels doing in a wing membrane of a morpho dragonfly?

Rhainer Guillermo Ferreira was so jolted by a scanning electron microscope image showing what looked like skinny, branching tracheal tubes in a morpho wing that he called in another entomologist for a second opinion. Guillermo Ferreira, then at Kiel University in Germany, showed the image to a colleague who also was “shocked,” he remembers. A third entomologist was called in. Shock all around.

The shimmering, bluest-of-skies wings of male Zenithoptera dragonflies might be unexpectedly and fully alive, Guillermo Ferreira says. That bold idea will take some testing. So for now, he and colleagues report the unusual tracheal respiratory system, the first in any insect wing as far as they know, in the May Biology Letters.

Scientists at the University of Adelaide are trying to create a robotic, autonomous dragonfly. While there appears to be some success on the mechanical front, one of the most fascinating aspects is that they discovered specialty neurons that help make the dragonfly such a successful hunter and they've managed to create algorithms that successfully reproduce their functionality in simulations.

Quote

Using cutting-edge equipment, the researchers managed to detect a new type of neuron that exhibits what they refer to as an “attentional spotlight”. This neuron, unlike others, manages to devote its electrical impulses to highlighting a single target amidst a swarm of distractors.

Additionally, the researchers found a selection of neurons that are designed to “predict the future”, in that they work out the most likely possible trajectory of the target’s movement. The combination of these two neuron types allow dragonflies to capture their prey with a ludicrously high hit rate.

Remarkably, the team then replicated these neurons using computational algorithms. When placed into a virtual reality environment, the virtual dragonfly was able to take out its prey just as successfully as it did in real life.

Yeah. Just what the world needs. A cleverer and better military drone. I wonder if this research is funded by the Australian Department of Defence?

Interesting thought. While the basic design of a dragonfly doesn't seem like a great design for a weapon, the targeting algorithms might be able to be altered to predict the behavior of targets trying to escape.

And is the Australian Department of Defence their version of an agency like Trump wants to build De Wall?

Suggested translation: And is the Australian Department of Defence their version of the sort of agency that Trump wants, to build his [big beautiful] Wall?

It took me five minutes, with a furrowed brow, to come up with that. I'm still not quite sure if it's what you meant. (Pull your socks up, young man. And get your hair cut). For example, the Australian Department of Defence is just what . . . well, the clue is in the name!

When an unmated female does, she picks a lucky male and they mate -- at which point she heads off to find large spiders to kill and lay eggs in.

So I'm led to believe. I blame that Webster person. He changed all the spellings just because he could. Awful little man! Bloody cheek!
