More on Pence trying to appear like a know-nothing and the unlikeliness that it's true.

Quote

Pence and his allies have repeatedly asserted that was not in the loop, not informed, not present, or otherwise not implicated in the various controversies—everything from former national security adviser Mike Flynn’s unauthorized lobbying for Turkey and conversations with Russian officials to the decision to fire FBI Director James Comey.

An anonymous source close to the administration complained to NBC on Friday about a “pattern … vis a vis Pence, that he was never, either intentionally or unintentionally, made aware of the facts.”

“It has to be intentional,” the source said of Pence’s repeated exclusion.

But the narrative that Pence’s hands are clean strains credulity. In some cases, it is contradicted outright by reports and documents establishing that the Vice President was in fact involved in the key moments that have defined the first four months of the Trump administration.

Over 100 Notre Dame graduates quietly leave when commencement speak Mike Pence steps up to the podium.

Quote

Vice President Mike Pence delivered the commencement address at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana on Sunday. But what Pence said was overshadowed by who didn’t care to hear it.

Over 100 newly-minted graduates silently walked out when Pence took the podium in Notre Dame stadium on Sunday morning. The protest, coordinated by a group called We StaND, had been planned for weeks, and was done with the blessing of the school’s administration. Paul Browne, Notre Dame’s Vice President for Public Affairs and Communications, tells The Daily Beast that the students who planned on protesting went so far as to meet with the head of campus security this week to discuss which exit to use and how to best leave the ceremony respectfully. As far as protests go, it was pretty polite.

There was no shouting, minimal booing, and little disruption, which allowed Pence to deliver his litany of political bullet points and milquetoast platitudes uninterrupted, and enabled the stadium crowd that remained to applaud in the appropriate places. Everything, from Pence’s greeting to his wooden “Go Irish!” sign off, went off without a hitch.

Pence’s invitation wasn’t a tacit endorsement of the Trump administration’s policies from Notre Dame students or the administration. In fact, during his introduction, University President Fr. John Jenkins mentioned Catholic positions on accepting refugees and immigrants, a seeming allusion to Pence and the Trump administration’s problematic record on those issues. Class of 2017 valedictorian C. J. Pine, founder of a student group called Solidarity with Syria, delivered an address immediately before Pence that skewered the Trump administration’s rhetoric. “If we are going to build walls against American students and international students, then I am skewered on the fence,” he said. Pine received a standing ovation.

Someone was all upset that those graduates were denied their special day.

My take? They got the diploma regardless. Their parents (friends, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc.) were there to see them. All that remains. And although they didn't "walk" with their class, they did something that will be far, far more memorable fifty years from now -- and worth far more pride. Speaking as a father, proud as I am of my graduates [1] I'd be even more so for having the moral courage to walk out.

Mike Pence, still a tool. This time it's over the overwhelming science that global warming is real, mad-made, and is going to cause some serious shit in the not too distant future.

Quote

Vice President Mike Pence said Friday that “for some reason or another, this issue of climate change has emerged as a paramount issue for the left in this country and around the world.”

In an interview with “Fox and Friends” Friday, a day after President Donald Trump announced he would withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement on climate change, Pence expressed bewilderment at the “long been a goal of the liberal left in this country” to advance a “climate change agenda.”

“For some reason or another, this issue of climate change has emerged as a paramount issue for the left in this country and around the world,” Pence said. “And through Kyoto, through President Obama’s cap-and-trade agenda, and then through the, in the last year of his administration to have America saddled in an international agreement in the Paris accord, I think put a real burden on our economy and our people. It was a bad deal for America.”

Maybe that "some reason" is that we are a more scientific than superstitious lot that doesn't believe the Earth is going to end in the next 100 years so we'd like to take care of it.

Like rats leaving a sinking ship: (Virtually unneeded emphasis added)

Pence distances himself from latest Russia bombshell, saying Trump Jr. meeting was 'before he joined the campaign'

Vice President Mike Pence distanced himself from the latest Russia-related controversy on Tuesday after Donald Trump Jr. tweeted emails showing him setting up a meeting with a Russian lawyer who he thought had damaging information on Hillary Clinton.
(SNIP)
A statement from Pence's press secretary noted that the meeting happened before he was named as then-Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's running mate in July.
"The vice president is working every day to advance the president's agenda," Marc Lotter, Pence's press secretary, said in a statement. "He was not aware of the meeting. He is also not focused on stories about the campaign — especially those pertaining to the time before he joined the campaign."

So if Trump is ousted, what would the Republican Party expect out of President Pence? (Bold mine.)

Quote

Republican lawmakers who are getting sick of all the drama coming from the Trump White House may increasingly turn their eyes longingly toward Vice President Mike Pence, a staunch conservative who has the ability to maintain message discipline.

In a GQ article that speculates what would happen if Pence became president, reporter Jason Zengerle speculates that Pence would seem like a “godsend” for Republicans who want to get their agenda passed.

Unlike Trump, whose infamously short attention span makes it difficult for the GOP to focus coverage on areas of political strength for too long without having to answer questions about alleged bloody face lifts, Pence can be laser-focused on helping the party achieve its goals.

Or as one former Pence adviser explains to Zengerle, many Republicans see Pence as the perfect “think-tank-talk-news-created Republican robot.

There's so much horrible news about the Trump White House that you almost forget about Mike Pence who plays second scumbag in the band. An op-ed in the Charlotte Observer basically calls out his religious hypocrisy. Pence's is the "faith" of political expedience. The first part is Pence whining about a joke Joy Behar made about his brand of Christian. The author goes on to point out that he's all about pointing the finger at her but what about his boss?

Quote

While Pence was defending Christianity, more national news was circulating about why a porn star believed she was finally free to speak about her alleged affair with Pence's boss, President Donald Trump. A Trump lawyer had admitted to paying her for her silence, though he claimed that neither Trump nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction. The New Yorker then published an exhaustive story about another alleged Trump affair, one with the 1998 Playboy Playmate of the Year. She allegedly broke off the months-long affair because she felt guilty for sleeping with a married man and because Trump said vulgar things about black male sexual anatomy.

Pence had a lot to say about a religious joke by a comedian who is paid to say such things, but nothing about the immoral example his boss has set. It's in stark contrast to when Pence presented himself as deeply devout Christian on a talk show he hosted years ago and declared adultery a serious offense that said something disturbing about leaders who commit such acts.

It's why Pence's words about his faith ring hollower by the day. They sound hypocritical, situational, unprincipled. They also illustrate just how much damage white evangelical Christians have done to the religion they profess to love. They've created a new reality, one in which leaders' actions don't matter, so long as they have the right ideology and can help secure a few long-sought political victories. It underscores why liberal Christians in the South are going to have to lead the flock out of this self-imposed spiritual wilderness.

For too long, Christianity has been presented as the domain of white conservatives, particularly in the South. Their interpretation of the Bible has been taken as the most genuine kind, even when other Christians find no incompatibility with gay marriage and the faith. Journalists and political scientists deemed these conservatives the true values voters, even though black voters cherish Christianity just as much and frequently vote for Democrats.

If religious leaders can make God-centered arguments in favor of an unrepentant man like Trump and plenty of high-profile white Christian conservatives have no behavior can be deemed out-of-bounds. It has put a stain on the religion that won't be easily washed away, no matter how piously people like Pence speak about the faith.

Mike Pence continues to show his true self on and off. He's an immoral scumbag "wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross." Defense of a man who caused death and injury of inmates and who was found guilty of violating the law and contempt of court is indefensible.

Quote

During a tax policy event in Arizona on Tuesday, Vice President Mike Pence introduced Trump-pardoned ex-Sheriff Joe Arpaio as a “tireless champion” of the “rule of law.”

“(He’s) a great friend of this President, a tireless champion of strong borders and the rule of law,” he said according to an NBC video clip of the event. “He’s spent a lifetime in law enforcement— Sheriff Joe Arpaio and I’m honored to have you here.”

The irony of Pence’s comments was lost on the crowd, which met the Vice President’s introduction of Arpaio with cheers and applause. Arpaio is currently running for retiring Sen. Jeff Flake’s (R-AZ) seat in Congress.

Arpaio, who was pardoned by President Donald Trump in August and is currently facing a legal battle to get his record cleared, was convicted of contempt of court for violating court orders that barred his office from discriminatory policing practices.

If Mueller was investigating a Mafia family, Pence would be just as guilty in any conspiracy charges forthcoming.

At least no one takes Dumpster seriously about being pious. Even the vast majority of the evangelical base sees him as a flawed vessel used by their god for some greater divine purposes. But the blindness toward Pence is in some ways worse.

If the pathetic Dems can't flip Congress in November, things will begin to look more the Handmaid's Tale. Liberal democracy is already threatened in more and more places around the world. I don't know that it can survive as a preferred form of human government, without the US leading the way. Don't bet on this. As we've covered here before they are looking at as bad a Senate challenge as it gets and the House districts are so effectively gerrymandered that the Republicans have a huge structural advantage.

You can make that "disloyal scumbag" as Pence may be setting himself up for Trump's fall.

Quote

Vice President Mike Pence is ruffling feathers as he consolidates control of the Republican Party, The New York Times reported Monday.

Pence is “unsettling a group of Mr. Trump’s fierce loyalists who fear they are forging a separate power base.”

Two senior White House officials referred to “Pence’s empire-building” after an aborted attempt to hire a GOP operative who was part of the Never Trump movement during the 2016 primaries.

The chaotic White House has created a situation where Pence “found a yawning opening within the West Wing, as Mr. Trump’s principal political aides spend much of their time managing his impulses and vying with each other, instead of overseeing the party and this year’s campaign.”

The Vice President’s chief of staff, Nick Ayers, hired William Kirkland away from the president and “Trump officials believe he will effectively run a shadow political office for Mr. Pence, a setup unheard-of so soon into a new administration.”

You can make that "disloyal scumbag" as Pence may be setting himself up for Trump's fall.

Well, getting it in perspective, this is simply post-Machiavellian politics: Western politics, in fact. Any of you who have not read The Prince, or have forgotten most of it, do a bit of revision, then ask yourself the question "Who would I rather have as Senate Majority Leader: Mitch McConnell or Niccolo Machiavelli?" (Mr Pence is not yet in excelsis).

We had one of them: Peter Mandelson, MP (Lab), (now Lord Mandelson[1]) in many Cabinet posts under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. He was totally unlike McConnell in detail, but his nickname among journalist was "The Prince of Darkness".
