Of course we're now getting as far on the edge of snake killing justification as we can. It's like the gay wedding cake of snake killing. But it's almost impossible to get bitten by one due to their rear fangs (not front like a rattlesnake) and tiny mouth though it's certainly not 100% safe and the venom is particularly nasty.I'd also be interested to see a picture of that snake. Coral Snakes are actually pretty uncommon and I figure there's at best a 1 in 4 chance that it was a Coral Snake vs. a Milk Snake, Scarlet Snake, or Scarlet Kingsnake.

And just as a side FYI (to everybody here) they're "venomous", not "poisonous." Toxic things you consume are poisonous. Things that inject venom are venomous.

Yeah, well you explain that rear fang business to the parents. Noted that they are venomous and not poisonous and that the venom is particularly nasty. As to what it was, I don't think they had a herpetologist handy so they did the best they could under the circumstances.

By all means let's not blame gun culture for this type of incident. And I'm sure we'd have the same outcome with knives.

Quote

A father and son gunned down their neighbor in an alley behind their Texas homes during an argument over trash — and the victim’s fiancée recorded the slaying on video.

Johnnie, 67, and Michael Miller, 31, have been charged with murder in the Sept. 1 shooting of Aaron Howard as part of an ongoing feud, reported KTXS-TV.

The 37-year-old Howard had gone outside to throw out trash when the father and son confronted him, and all three men argued and threatened one another during the confrontation.

Abilene police said the elder Miller went outside armed with a handgun, and his adult son went inside the home he shares with his father and grabbed a shotgun.

Someone also went into Howard’s home and retrieved a baseball bat, according to investigators.

Johnnie fired first and shot Howard, and then the son shot their neighbor with a shotgun blast.

Howard’s fiancée Kara Box recorded the deadly argument on her cell phone and shared the video with the TV station.

“People deserve to know what actually happened, and, you know, they deserve to know John and Michael Miller are murderers,” Box said.

The video shows at least four shots were fired during the confrontation, and Box said she was almost shot by one of them.

“You can see that I stepped in between them, and I said, ‘You’re not going to shoot my husband,’ then he fired past my head,” Box said.

Can’t be “stand” your ground when you walk up with guns drawn and pointed. Not that I’d be shocked if they tried this defense. They don’t really have anything else.

Has the NRA run out of Russian money to hand out to Republicans?

Quote

The National Rifle Association has largely pulled back from funding Republican candidates this election cycle as the organization deals with financial headaches and an FBI investigation into its ties to Russian officials.

The NRA has been a major donor to Republican candidates. The group poured $16 million to Republican candidates during the 2014 midterms, according to the Federal Election Commission, and a spent a whopping $54 million on Republicans in the 2016 cycle, with $32 million of that to elect President Donald Trump.

McClatchy reports that the NRA has pledged just $1.6 million to Republicans this cycle, a mere 10 percent of its previous midterm spend. The report notes that the decline comes amid an FBI probe into whether the group illegally received Russian money to spend on the election.

The article goes on to note all of the investigations they are under. Looks like the chickens have come home to roost.

If you've got public schools paid for by taxpayers, you're in a socialist nation. If you have public roads paid for by taxpayers, socialist nation. If you've got public defense (police, fire, military, coast guard) paid for by tax dollars, socialist nation. If you're in a nation that has nationalized or localized delivery of services that are not paid for by users alone, you're in a socialist nation- the only question is how socialist. As I see it, we have the military pay to protecting the shipping lanes for our fuel needs which makes up very socialist. In a capitalist nation, the people supplying the oil would pay for their own defense force.

Another article on how the NRA has lost more than a little political power. I guess making insane statements and videos on NRA TV is starting to take its toll. Looks like they've tarnished their brand when they crossed the line from intransigent to batshit nuts.

Quote

A top rating from the NRA is no longer the badge of honor it once was for Ohio Republican Bob Gibbs. For the first time in his decade of service in Congress, he isn’t bragging about his A-plus rating.

In Florida, Republican Brian Mast must have known he was risking his A rating from the NRA when he wrote an op-ed declaring his support for an assault weapons ban after the shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school in Parkland. The gun rights group now gives him a question mark.

In Pennsylvania, Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, a former FBI agent running for reelection to Congress, got former congresswoman and gun violence survivor Gabby Giffords’ endorsement after he was the only Republican in the U.S. House to vote earlier this year for a measure that would have kept guns out of the hands of dangerously ill people.

It’s easier to find Republicans in competitive races toning down their NRA credentials than it is to find Democrats actively campaigning on gun control and gun safety. Rather, Democrats trying to pick up competitive seats to regain the majority for their party are more inclined to tout their comfort with firearms. Xochitl Torres Small, a young Latina running for an open seat in New Mexico, turned an uphill race into a toss-up “on the sheer strength of her charisma,” says David Wasserman with the non-partisan Cook Political Report. “She’s an avid hunter.”

Quote

The news for now is that after 25 years of mostly fruitless effort, and 15 years of warning Democratic candidates to be “exceptionally careful” with this issue because no matter how high gun control polls, “the 30 percent who oppose will use it as a single issue—that’s the importance of the NRA,” Hart is convinced that this cycle is different, that the NRA is more of an albatross than a ticket to victory.

There was disagreement on the last shooting case (also from Florida) that we discussed. I suspect this one will see greater agreement. AFAIC this psycho murdered a man for shoplifting what was probably a sub-$20 item.

Quote

Florida commissioner who opposed gun control protests spurred on by the school shooting in Parkland was caught on video shooting and killing a suspected shoplifter at his military surplus store.

The Tampa Bay Times reported that on October 3, Lakeland Commissioner Michael Dunn shot 50-year-old Cristobal Lopez after the man allegedly stole a hatchet from Dunn’s Vets Army Navy Surplus shop in the Tampa suburb.

Police released the security footage of the incident after questions arose whether the commissioner was justified in shooting Lopez.

Dunn reportedly confronted the alleged shoplifter and asked if he was going to pay for the hatchet he tried to pocket. In the surveillance video, the commissioner is seen grabbing Lopez’s shirt and fires at least once before the man falls to the pavement just outside the store’s door, shakes for a moment, then falls limp.

In the last three minutes of the video, Dunn is seen pacing in and out of the camera’s range and does not attempt to resuscitate him. By the time police arrived, Lopez was dead.

The Tampa Bay Times noted that in July, the commissioner hosted a counter-rally to a March for Our Lives gun control protest at his store. The report also noted that this was the second time Dunn had shot someone, the first being an accidental and non-fatal incident when he was 19.

Dunn has not been charged, and Lakeland police and the Florida Attorney General’s Office are reportedly investigating the shooting death of Lopez, described as a “transient” agricultural worker.

Here's the surveillance video. It's graphic.

He's showing the MAGA community how do deal with those pesky brown people. What's the problem? Look the guy was a criminal who would have cost the good (white) people of Florida tens of thousands a year to incarcerate him. The commissioner should be awarded for his civic action to save the taxpayers.
