Actually two criminals. It really does seem that being a patriot means that it's impossible for anybody from your tribe to violate federal law.

Quote

A loosely organized group of self-styled patriots is convening in rural Oregon Saturday in hopes of provoking another showdown with the federal government, this time in support of a father and son ranching duo convicted of torching public land.

Dwight Hammond Jr., 73, and his son Steven Hammond, 46, are due to report to federal prison Jan. 4 for starting a series of wildfires on federal lands in 2012, a crime that carries a five-year mandatory minimum sentence.

Now a cast of right wing-rabble rousers are coming to their defense, including the infamous anti-Muslim activist Jon Ritzheimer and Ammon Bundy, son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who became something of an anti-government folk hero for his own standoff over public lands. Ritzheimer posted a “call to action” video on Dec. 26, in which one activist calls on “all patriots, constitutionalists, militias, and good Americans who believe in the Constitution” to converge on remote Burns, Oregon, to show their support for the Hammonds.

They're really going to keep pushing until they get the shootout they want, aren't they?

And this time it's not over grazing fees or other civil issues -- this time it's an open-and-shut criminal conviction, which makes the little darlings materially no different than co-conspirators in a prison break. Not the kind of thing that any rule of law can tolerate, so they may just get the armed insurrection they've been looking for. Federal DA should have a whole host of warrants sworn out pretty quick.

But the Hammonds don't want Bundy help:

Quote

The Hammonds have not welcomed the Bundys' help.

"Neither Ammon Bundy nor anyone within his group/organization speak for the Hammond Family," the Hammonds' lawyer W. Alan Schroeder wrote to Sheriff David Ward.

Dwight Hammond said he and his son plan to peacefully report to prison Jan. 4 as ordered by the judge.
"We gave our word that's what we would do, and we intend to act on it," he told the AP.

http://www.timesunio...ent-6731624.php

It seems that Mr Bundy doesn't want to stand down. I found this message from the founder of the "Oathkeepers" on the "Oathkeepers" website:

Quote

And despite Dwight and Steven Hammond’s decision to voluntarily report to Federal custody, Ammon has issued a video titled “BREAKING ALERT! URGENT CALL TO ACTION! ALL CALL FOR ALL PATRIOTS! MILITIAS! OATH-KEEPERS! FROM AMMON BUNDY RANCH!” In that video, posted on December 29, Ammon Bundy asks those who went to Bundy Ranch to now go to the town of Burns “to make a stand” and he urges them to “come to Burns and defend this family and defend this county.”

https://www.oathkeep...nd-family-does/

Sounds like the Oathkeepers don't want to be involved. The whole thing is quite an interesting view into the thinking of this group.

Ever read the bundy ranch blog? What a bizarre and weird world they live in there. It is particularly fascinating to read about their rather innovative reading of the constitution. I should put reading in quotes, really, because reading without comprehension isn't really reading at all.

I, for one, have no problem seeing LEOs treat any of the Bundy clan or their supporters in the same fashion that they treat random black people they encounter. Like 12 year olds with toy guns.

I kinda hope the Justice department takes down the whole Bundy gang sometime around November 5 or slightly after in 2016. I can understand not wanting to give the knuckle-draggers any more to get excited about before the election...

Shut off the water, gas and electricity. See how long they can imitate living like the founding fathers...

Edited to add: cut off any and all communications via land line and jamming phone signals. Provide them with an Army field phone and one land line to the Feds. News blackout would be a nice touch.

If you've got public schools paid for by taxpayers, you're in a socialist nation. If you have public roads paid for by taxpayers, socialist nation. If you've got public defense (police, fire, military, coast guard) paid for by tax dollars, socialist nation. If you're in a nation that has nationalized or localized delivery of services that are not paid for by users alone, you're in a socialist nation- the only question is how socialist. As I see it, we have the military pay to protecting the shipping lanes for our fuel needs which makes up very socialist. In a capitalist nation, the people supplying the oil would pay for their own defense force.

That seems to be the consensus. $HERSELF recalls similar treatments being used long ago in Montana.

  • No need to cut the phones or jam them. No warrantless stuff required either, just identify the accounts of cell signals starting in the building and either cut them off or route to the authorities. Likewise the landline.
  • News blackout is a bad idea.
  • $HERSELF is the really evil one in the household. She's fine with anyone leaving if they lay down their arms and surrender. She's also fine with anyone wanting to join them going in. On foot, with all the food and water they can carry. Also muttered something about "doners." Or maybe it was "donners."
  • Pity it's a Federal offense (taking over the building, armed insurrection, all that.) Because apparently being tried locally by the people they're ostensibly "protecting" would be ... harsh.

These guys have been lighting illegal fires on this land since 2001:
http://landrights.or...nd_Redacted.pdf

Upon being directly confronted about lighting fires while firefighters were actively trying to put out fires he had started in the days earlier he responded that the firefighters "had better clear out". (pg. 10)
These guys are nuts, but not nuts enough to want the Bundy's "help" - that's saying something.

My initial response to this thing was that 5 years in prison seemed a bit harsh. After reading that, I'd throw away the key.

Ah the good old days. As ROTC Cadets we guarded the ROTC "barracks". One little vignette I remember was running into one of the admin building occupiers (AKA Hippie radicals) while we were getting "food" at the White Castle.

Can all of these people be prosecuted now? I have little sympathy for them and they should be starved out if need be to avoid a confrontation.

Some right wingers are arguing that the Bundy action is no different from the Occupy Wall Street protests. I see one big difference. The Occupy Wall Street folks were not armed.

CSM article says the Hammonds already served some months in prison, were released, but the Federal lawyers appealed that their sentance didn't meet the required minimum. I can actually see some complaint that you are convicted, sentenced, serve your time and are then told to return to prison because the original judge didn't sentence you correctly. Of course, that's not what the militia.cretins are complaining about, which I suppose is why the same locals who protested originally are now telling the outsiders to leave.
