Another reason might be that the first year of migration and/or wintering has a very high attrition rate. If you're raising 1-2 young a season then your probably not even replacing yourself over the long haul.

That sounds more likely to me than some of the suggestions in the comments. It is also probably more reasonable for temperate parents to take care of a lager brood given more daylight hours.

Yeah, I sure didn't get the longer wing hypothesis. Wing length is just one factor in flying capabilities. Higher aspect ratios are more efficient, which is why birds that fly a lot (swallows, vultures, hawks) all have longer wings. OTOH, maneuverability is favored by shorter more rapid wings.

No way. Hoopoes are elegant, well behaved, and call softly.

Sweet! The other bird is a Bee-eater. They are stunningly beautiful. They don't even look real.

I think you have that a bit backwards. That should be "When one is Trump, one does not have to be PC."

Here I thought it was "The Republicans Suck". I mean, they are pretty much indistinguishable from Talk Radio. Also, does anyone think Walker, Carlson or any of the rest would be worse than Trump? Less impulsive, maybe, but they'd all be the pliant right hand to sign the bills a GOP Congress supplied, and appoint rabid RW judges to fill vacancies on the courts.
