Geoengineering? And who would be running that? Has anyone got any suggestions who would not scare me shitless?

You just gotta' love the denialists and semi-denialists who say that climate change science is too complex and inaccurate to use for making policy and besides putting the brakes on climate change it too costly but then toss out a suggestion of geoengineering. Traveler looks at it as a last move to be made out of of total desperation. They see it as an excuse to do nothing.

In short: geoengineering is squeezing a balloon.
The way a lot of catastrophes happen is that X doesn't occur because there are safeguards in place, therefore people assume X isn't a worry and they remove the safeguards. Then X happens.

When, if ever, will the red states learn. I'm betting on never. Any solution will have to be shoved down their throats because they won't see the benefit in a direct manner in their own back yards. That means any solution must be socialism and we all know that socialism is evil.

Quote

Torrential downpours have flooded huge swaths of the Midwest and the Southeast since last week. Rain over the weekend triggered flash floods in several states, including Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas, Oklahoma, North Carolina, and Florida. In some states, more than a month’s worth of rain fell in a day.

Beyond flash floods, rivers rising more slowly in places like Iowa have threatened drinking water. In Illinois, flooding this past week has closed roads and bridges. Atlanta broke a single-day rainfall record on Saturday with 4 inches of rain. Nebraska issued a second disaster declaration last week in response to the floods.

These rains have come atop flooding tied to the wet winter in many parts of the country followed by a wet spring. The ongoing flooding has already led to several deaths and, once the water recedes, will exact a huge toll on the economy. One of the biggest concerns is the impact of floods on crops like corn and soy, which are mainly grown in the Midwest. Waters have already damaged some fields, and the soaked soil is preventing new crops from being planted. That’s more bad news for farmers already struggling under the Trump administration’s ongoing trade war.

And more rain is coming. The National Weather Service is projecting continued rain and flooding along the Mississippi River this week, stretching through Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

The Trump administration is in full science suppression mode when it comes to climate change. (I'm sure they're suppressing other inconvenient facts.)

Quote

Talk about a White House as an ostrich sticking its head in the sand.

News that the Trump administration will remove the underpinnings of Science in forming its periodic long-term environmental reviews and eliminate any mention of serious climate disruption is breathtaking.

In a remarkably calm report, The New York Times let us know that after two years of unraveling environmental regulation and enforcement, the Trump administration now stands ready to remake science itself—at least in so far as official government recognition is concerned.

“Parts of the federal government will no longer fulfill what scientists say is one of the most urgent jobs of climate science studies: reporting on the future effects of a rapidly warming planet and presenting a picture of what the earth could look like by the end of the century if the global economy continues to emit heat-trapping carbon dioxide pollution from burning fossil fuels.”

To simply eliminate any scientific mention that there are problems ahead marks a new low for the leader of the most powerful economy in the world.

For example, the White House has insisted that scientific assessments produced use only computer-generated climate models that project the impact of climate change through 2040, rather than through the end of the century, as had been done previously, to lessen the worst predictions of worldwide hunger, migration and rising waters that scientists globally see ahead. “Scientists say that would give a misleading picture because the biggest effects of current emissions will be felt after 2040. Models show that the planet will most likely warm at about the same rate through about 2050. From that point until the end of the century, however, the rate of warming differs significantly with an increase or decrease in carbon emissions.”

Even a climate change denier like Trump, who has pulled the United States out of global agreements to commit to policies aimed at forestalling the worst effects of climate disruption, you’d think that the disagreement would be about what to do about all the environmental fuss. But to simply eliminate any scientific mention that there are problems ahead mark a new low for the leader of the most powerful economy in the world.

Dems willing, we have less than two more years of this bullshit. But I am not very sanguine about Dems anymore. Pelosi may be able to pull in the reins to correct the lurch to the left, but I doubt it.

The center has moved rightward. Makes it tough to judge what's a lurch and what's a return to the center.

I don't consider Medicare for All a lurch to the center. Nor a 70% top bracket. Even though that don't apply to virtually anyone, that doesn't make rust belters comfortable with Dems. Anti-Hyde is a total disaster. That just wiped out half of the potential "independents".

I remember posting about this technology a while ago. It seems like they're making real strides. I'll be interested in reading about what kind of efficiency this new technology has and what sort of electrical grid needs to go into the building to take advantage of generation spread over so many windows. Solar on both the tops and sides of buildings seems like a real winner though.

If it's not absorbing visible light, it must be getting its energy from IR. Which means it's halfway to greenhouse, which might be fine with those who never have to worry about cooling but for some of us is ... not attractive.

I may have posted this before but it's a very interesting timeline on global temperature vs. humanity over the past 22,000 years.

From the Department of No Surprise Whatsoever we now have emails showing Trump reached out to known climate change deniers to help craft the administration's message campaign of lies.

Quote

The Trump administration sought advice from a vocal climate-change denier to help shape its environmental message, according to the Associated Press, which saw emails acquired through the Freedom of Information Act. The emails, written in 2018 and 2019, included correspondence between William Happer, a member of the National Security Council, and officials from the Heartland Institute, one of America’s most vocal climate-change challengers. The AP quotes a March 3 email exchange between Happer and Heartland adviser Hal Doiron in which the Trump official was given arguments that would help counter environmentalists’ messaging. In those emails, Happer admitted he had also discussed the issue with another Heartland adviser. “It’s the equivalent to formulating anti-terrorism policy by consulting with groups that deny terrorism exists,” Matthew Nisbet, a professor of environmental communication and public policy with Northeastern University, told the AP.
