Back in June, an Atheist monument was erected on the grounds of the Bradford County Courthouse in FL. Since the court had ruled that the Ten Commandments could appear as well as any other display like it, the atheists took them up on it.

Now the Satanic Temple wishes to erect their own monument next to the Ten Commandments on state capital grounds:

It seems that the right-wing Christianists in government are about to have their vows to uphold the Constitution put to the test. It can be all religions or none, but it can't be "just the one we want."

OK, I'm seriously going to have to reconsider my agnostic religious viewpoint. The Satanic Temple just ROCKS! This time they are handing out religious materials at public schools in Orange County, FL in accordance to their law.

Quote

"We would never seek to establish a precedent of disseminating our religious materials in public schools because we believe our constitutional values are better served by respecting a strong separation of Church and State," Doug Mesner, co-founder and spokesman for The Satanic Temple, said in a statement under the pseudonym Lucien Greaves. "However, if a public school board is going to allow religious pamphlets and full Bibles to be distributed to students — as is the case in Orange County, Florida — we think the responsible thing to do is to ensure that these students are given access to a variety of differing religious opinions, as opposed to standing idly by while one religious voice dominates the discourse and delivers propaganda to youth."

Surprise !!! The First Amendment applies to ALL religions.

Wait a minute, you mean "religious freedom" and the First Amendment don't mean Christians Only ?

I would absolutely LOVE to see a Madrassa apply for Florida state aid to "religious/private schools" like in Louisiana.

If you've got public schools paid for by taxpayers, you're in a socialist nation. If you have public roads paid for by taxpayers, socialist nation. If you've got public defense (police, fire, military, coast guard) paid for by tax dollars, socialist nation. If you're in a nation that has nationalized or localized delivery of services that are not paid for by users alone, you're in a socialist nation- the only question is how socialist. As I see it, we have the military pay to protecting the shipping lanes for our fuel needs which makes up very socialist. In a capitalist nation, the people supplying the oil would pay for their own defense force.

Satanic Temple gets approval to put up a display at the Michigan State Capital:

Quote

A group of Satanists said today it had received permission from local officials to build a holiday display on the grounds of the Michigan State Capitol.

The Satanic display was to have accompanied a Christmas Nativity scene which had also received permission to set up on the capitol lawn in Lansing, about 35 miles northwest of Hell, Mich. The creche, which had been requested by a group from Florida, has not been installed.

Local officials said they had no recourse but to allow the Satanists to erect what looks like a goth amateur art school project.

Interesting. I like the idea of alternatives, but they should lease it out to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims -Sunni and Shiite (yeah both for sure ), Zoroastrians, and any other bonafide religion out there. Showing religious harmony as under the constitution would make a statement. Wonder if anybody is thinking about that? If not, they should be.

Maybe these could be posted along side the nativity scenes? Seems a more apropos set of ideas than the baby Jesus thing

Here are the "Ten Non-Commandments" chosen as the winners:
1. Be open-minded and be willing to alter your beliefs with new evidence.
2. Strive to understand what is most likely to be true, not to believe what you wish to be true.
3. The scientific method is the most reliable way of understanding the natural world.
4. Every person has the right to control of their body.
5. God is not necessary to be a good person or to live a full and meaningful life.
6. Be mindful of the consequences of all your actions and recognize that you must take responsibility for them.
7. Treat others as you would want them to treat you, and can reasonably expect them to want to be treated. Think about their perspective.
8. We have the responsibility to consider others, including future generations.
9. There is no one right way to live.
10. Leave the world a better place than you found it.
Fear Sells!

If they held services that serve beer, I could become downright devout.

Just to add more to our trove of useless to know facts:

the VA recognizes many different religious symbols that can be requested by families to be placed on official Government Issue headstones in VA Cemeteries. In the past couple of years the Wiccan symbol was approved. So I'm thinking if the VA recognizes all these different religions so can the Oklahoma State House

I looked this up a few years back when I was birding in a Veteran's Cemetery in California. Here's the current symbol list:
