All Sen. Mike Lee (R-UTmost Partisan Hack) wanted to ask about was guns, guns, and more guns.

Quote

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) used the bulk of his question time to grill Garland on gun rights and gun control bills. He asked Garland about a specific vote that Garland made as a judge to rehear a D.C. gun control bill case. Other committee members so far have not dug deep into Garland’s judicial record.

More on the sudden worry by GOP Senators about politicizing the DOJ with whining about how bad it was under Obama while studiously avoiding the most politicized DOJ in our lifetime under Trump. is in on it because of course he is.

Quote

A number of Republican senators who blithely supported former Attorney General Bill Barr using his post to act as former President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer are suddenly expressing serious concern that Merrick Garland promise to be apolitical in the same role.

“My soul criterion for voting for your confirmation is your pledge to make sure that politics does not affect your job as attorney general,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said Monday at Garland’s Senate Judiciary hearing.

Cornyn, who voted to confirm Barr, later was a point Republican scrambling to smooth over strained relations between Trump and Barr last winter, loathe to let a reliable ally be fired going into the election.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) took the argument a step further, blaming the “Obama-Biden Justice Department” for being “politicized and weaponized” in an unprecedented way.

“It is very much my hope, if you are confirmed as attorney general, that you will bring that reputation for integrity to the Department of Justice and demonstrate a willingness to stand up to what will be inevitable political pressure to once again politicize the Department of Justice and use it as a tool to attack the political opponents of the current administration,” he said.

He did not mention the Trump-era DOJ in his line of questioning.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) adopted Cruz’s framing too, citing the “Obama-Biden administration” as the exemplar of a corrupt DOJ.

“If you are confirmed, will you resist the calls and efforts by political groups to politicize the Department of Justice, to use political targeting, will you adhere to the statute down the middle and enforce the law fairly and equally?” he asked.

Per 538 Biden is sitting around 55% approval and 38% disapproval. That puts his net approval at over 20 points above Trump in his first month. Suck it, Donald. You're losing the ratings game again.

I remain dumbfounded that these Senators just out and out lie about anything and everything. There is no decency or sense of honor in these people; nothing but gang ethos. How will we recover from this? Can we?

You have to grasp that while "decency and honor" disappeared from a few of them it's much more of a case where the party and its supporters punished these traits in those serving. That attracted a host of scam artists who have never had either. Cruz? Hawley? Graham? McConnell? All are steaming piles of pure, unbridled ambition. You can't expect them to exhibit characteristics that they never had. Unfortunately they and their ilk have won the Republican civil war and I don't see the party recovering anywhere remotely near the end of my lifetime. The question is whether or not enough of the younger population will see them for who they are and drive them into semi-permanent minority status.

The list of Dem and GOP witnesses for Tuesday was released. The inclusion by Republicans of the utterly partisan, corrupt, and contemptible Ken Starr speaks volumes. They're whining about potential politicization of the DOJ and then drag in judicial politicization personified.

Projection. They fully expected the Mueller Investigation to like a Starr one. And when it wasn't they still behaved that way. Mueller gave them a great gift with the writing of the report and his performance at the hearing and they still behaved as if this was a Starr "investigation."

Cornyn indicates he will not be a douche nozzle this time. It will be interesting what the hard-core members of the Treason Caucus do. It will take a lot of cynicism for the likes of Hawley and Cruz to vote against him but I believe they may well be up down to the task.

Quote

Cornyn indicated after the hearing Monday that he’ll vote for Garland, cementing a likely easy and bipartisan confirmation.

“That’s my intention,” he said when asked about voting to confirm him. “I think he’s had an incredible career. And I think he’s seems like a fundamentally decent human being.”

Biden really wants Tanden one way or the other.

Quote

White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain said on Wednesday night that Neera Tanden, President Joe Biden’s embattled pick for director of the Office of Budget Management (OMB), will be offered another role in the administration if the Senate refuses to confirm her.

Klain told MSNBC that “we’re fighting our guts out” for Tanden, whose confirmation is being stonewalled by outraged GOP senators and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) over her incendiary tweets about Republican lawmakers-the kind of social media activity that GOP senators did not find disqualifying when President Donald Trump attacked his political enemies on Twitter.

Klain signaled on Wednesday that the White House is still holding out hope that they’ll find the Republican support they need to get Tanden confirmed.

“We had [Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA)] announce tonight that he’s open minded on Neera’s confirmation. We have other Republican senators we’re talking to,” he said.

However, Klain suggested that there would be other opportunities for Tanden in the administration if she does not prevail in her OMB nomination.

“We will find some other place for her to serve in the administration that doesn’t require Senate confirmation,” the White House official said.

“But we’re going to get her confirmed,” he added. “That’s what we’re working for.”
