The Pentagon has ordered Stars and Stripes to shut down for no good reason

Trump wants to pull funding from Stars and Stripes, a newspaper for American troops that began in the Civil War and has been serving our soldiers.

Even for those of us who are all too wearily familiar with President Donald Trump’s disdain for journalists, his administration’s latest attack on the free press is a bit of a jaw-dropper.

In a heretofore unpublicized recent memo, the Pentagon delivered an order to shutter Stars and Stripes, a newspaper that has been a lifeline and a voice for American troops since the Civil War. The memo orders the publisher of the news organization (which now publishes online as well as in print) to present a plan that “dissolves the Stars and Stripes” by Sept. 15 including "specific timeline for vacating government owned/leased space worldwide.”

“The last newspaper publication (in all forms) will be September 30, 2020,” writes Col. Paul Haverstick Jr., the memo’s author.

Quote

Today Stars and Stripes is printed at sites around the world and delivered daily to troops — even those on the front lines, where the internet is spotty or inaccessible. As the “local paper” for the military, it provides intensive and critical coverage of issues that are important to members of the nation’s armed services and “cuts through political and military brass BS talking points,” Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., a Marine veteran, told Military.com.

I don't know what Stars and STripes publishes, but since the military, according to recent polls, is turning against Donald, this is probably some sort of retribution. If you don;'t talk nice about Donald, if he has control of a situation, you won't get to talk at all.

I don't think this move is going to get him more military votes.

If he could, Trump would not hesitate to pull the plug on all manner of newspapers and tv channels and online sites.

That won't matter if they have to mail their ballots in, now will it?

I was thinking the same thing. But judging by the sizable blow-back on Twitter after Trump's remarks on the 'suckers' and 'losers' in the military from numerous children, parents, spouses and friends here on the mainland, any additional attack on the personnel in the military is not going to go well. Or shouldn't. But then it's Trump and the MAGAts.

Who just looooove to tell us how much they "support" the troops. Obama saluted with a coffee cup? They lost their friggin' minds in a fit of spittle filled outrage. Trump insults POWs, turns the VA over to golf buddies with no experience, won't stand up to Putin over having bounties put on their heads, and calls them losers? "MAAAAAGA!"

The military will just have to get its news from Faux...except for polling, ignore the polling.

I used to work in a DoD facility as a civilian, and there were copies of Stars and Stripes in our mail room. Initially, in one of the first times reading through it, I found the candor of the tone somewhat surprising. It's kind of in the "permission to speak freely, sir?" vein. Which ultimately, I came to realize, provides a needed platform, outside the formal command structure, for honest feedback from the rank and file about policies and practices that might need attention or aren't working.

Two questions:

1. In any of Trump's businesses, do you think constructive criticism is encouraged (or even tolerated) to point out things that need improvement?
2. How successful have his businesses been in identifying and addressing issues?

That's exactly how he's always going to be as Commander-in-chief.

I'm actually a bit surprised Trump didn't privatize it and hand it over to Faux, OAN, or Sinclair.

Trump Vows to Keep Stars and Stripes Funded After Pentagon Moves to Shut It Down

President Donald Trump has, for the second time in weeks, says he's halting planned cuts to a Pentagon program -- this time vowing to keep the Stars and Stripes newspaper running after the Defense Department moved to close it down.
Trump tweeted on Friday that funds to Stars and Stripes would not be cut under his watch.

"It will continue to be a wonderful source of information to our Great Military!" the president tweeted.

If you've got public schools paid for by taxpayers, you're in a socialist nation. If you have public roads paid for by taxpayers, socialist nation. If you've got public defense (police, fire, military, coast guard) paid for by tax dollars, socialist nation. If you're in a nation that has nationalized or localized delivery of services that are not paid for by users alone, you're in a socialist nation- the only question is how socialist. As I see it, we pay the military pay to protect the shipping lanes for our fuel needs which makes us very socialist. In a capitalist nation, the people supplying the oil would pay for their own defense force.

But — but — if Trump wanted to keep it, who wanted to shut it down, and why? Who is driving the shutdown? I'm struggling to keep up here.

Duh, the Deep State!!!

Because they're sneaky, and hate all that is good and American.

Dear Leader is our only defense against them, so he must be re-elected and given unlimited power.

Well, more likely a political appointee was tasked with doing this, with the understanding that he'd be the fall guy if there were a bad reaction. So a win for Dear Leader either way.
