Frank Luntz on the possible future of pollsters.

Quote

Frank Luntz, a top pollster for Republicans, asserted on Thursday night that if he and his fellow analysts are wrong yet again about who’ll win the election a la 2016, that blunder could spell doom for his industry.

“Right now the biggest issue is a trust deficit,” Luntz told Fox News hosts Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum. “And pollsters did not do a good job in 2016.”

“So if Donald Trump surprises people, if Joe Biden’s got a five or six point lead and then Donald Trump wins, my profession is done. It’s finished,” he continued. “You can make a mistake once, Bret. You cannot make it again.”

FiveThirtyEight currently pegs Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden as the “favored” candidate in the presidential race with an 87 in 100 chance of defeating President Donald Trump, who has a 12 in 100 chance of successfully fending him off. The Guardian’s polling averages largely show Biden leading Trump in key swing states, including Pennsylvania and Michigan, as do that of RealClearPolitics.

The only thing about this is the 538 did give Trump a 30% chance, which is hardly insignificant, plus the main polls were pretty much right about the popular vote. It's the Electoral College that makes it so tough, especially for those states with Republicans hell bent on stealing the vote ... which is all Republicans at this point.

The former CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, is finalizing a plan to become a citizen of the island of Cyprus, Recode has learned, becoming one of the highest-profile Americans to take advantage of one of the world’s most controversial “passport-for-sale” programs.

Schmidt, one of America’s wealthiest people, and his family have won approval to become citizens of the Mediterranean nation, according to a previously unreported notice in a Cypriot publication in October. While it is not clear why exactly Schmidt has pursued this foreign citizenship, the new passport gives him the ability to travel to the European Union, along with a potentially favorable personal tax regime.

Oh, Jeffrey. I can't remember if it was on TRS but I heard that Bill Maher made a joke where he said he'll now refer to masturbating as "toobin."

Quote

The New Yorker has fired staff writer Jeffrey Toobin after a weeks-long investigation into an incident in which he exposed himself during a video call with colleagues last month.

“I am writing to share with you that our investigation regarding Jeffrey Toobin is complete, and as a result, he is no longer affiliated with our company,” read a Wednesday memo obtained by The Daily Beast and addressed from Stan Duncan, Condé Nast’s chief people officer, to all staffers.

“I want to assure everyone that we take workplace matters seriously. We are committed to fostering an environment where everyone feels respected and upholds our standards of conduct,” the memo added.

In mid-October, the magazine suspended Toobin and announced an internal investigation after he was caught masturbating during an election simulation The New Yorker held over Zoom with top staffers involved. He was also placed on leave from CNN, where he’d long been an on-air contributor.

In a statement at the time, Toobin said it was an “embarrassingly stupid mistake,” that he made while he believed he was off camera. I apologize to my wife, family, friends and co-workers.”

Toobin publicly confirmed his exit on Wednesday afternoon, tweeting: “I was fired today by @NewYorker after 27 years as a Staff Writer. I will always love the magazine, will miss my colleagues, and will look forward to reading their work.”

Hunter Biden has said his taxes are being investigated. Right-wing freakout in 3, 2, ...

Quote

Delaware federal prosecutors are probing Hunter Biden’s tax affairs, he announced on Wednesday.

In a statement sent out by the Biden-Harris transition, Hunter Biden said that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware told his lawyer on Tuesday that there was a federal investigation into his tax affairs.

“I take this matter very seriously but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors,” the younger Biden said in a statement.

The transition team said in the release that President-elect Joe Biden was proud of his son, who had survived “vicious personal attacks of recent months, only to emerge stronger.”

CNN reported that the investigation began in 2018, before Bill Barr’s arrival. Jeff Sessions served as attorney general until Nov. 7, when Matt Whitaker took over as acting attorney general.

Federal prosecutors in Delaware are working with the IRS and FBI and are issuing subpoenas in the matter, CNN reported. The probe halted before the election, per standard DOJ practice, and has picked up in the weeks since. The investigation reportedly focuses on the younger Biden’s dealings in China, and is examining whether he violated tax or money laundering laws, CNN reported.

Of particular interest to investigators, CNN reported, was a 2.8 carat diamond that Hunter received in 2017 as a gift from Chinese businessman Ye Jianming.

The investigation comes to light after a political season in which President Trump and his associates sought to turn Hunter Biden’s dealings into a scandal that never materialized.

This is just sad.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer had to twice ask Sen. Dianne Feinstein to step aside from her leadership role on the Senate Judiciary Committee after she forgot their first conversation, The New Yorker reports. The article quotes several unnamed sources close to Feinstein expressing concern that the California Democrat, the oldest member of the Senate at 87, is struggling with her short-term memory. Jane Meyer reports that, following Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation process, Schumer had several “serious and painful talks” with Feinstein during which he encouraged her to step aside “with her dignity intact.” Schumer then reportedly had to confront her again after Feinstein forgot about their conversation. She announced last month that she will not seek another term as the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, citing a need to put more focus on wildfires and drought conditions in her home state.

Anonymous shell companies may become a thing of the past.

Quote

If you’re a corrupt foreign official or drug trafficker, there’s a pretty easy way to protect your illicit cash: create an anonymous shell company.

You form a shell company — meaning a business that exists only on paper, with no employees, no products it makes or sells, no revenue, nothing except maybe a bank account and some assets — but you do it without disclosing your (the owner’s) real name, offering a convenient way to launder your money and evade law enforcement in the United States.

Except that might now be a lot harder to do in the US. A provision in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the $741 billion defense bill, will effectively ban anonymous shell companies.

If signed into law, when someone opens a shell corporation, they’ll be required to provide the owner’s name and some basic identifying information. This simple step will give law enforcement and national security officials a powerful tool to crack down on corruption.

Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) announced he won't be seeking re-election. I wonder if there are many or even any Republicans who will retire out of the sheer embarrassment and shame for being a Republican.

If you've got public schools paid for by taxpayers, you're in a socialist nation. If you have public roads paid for by taxpayers, socialist nation. If you've got public defense (police, fire, military, coast guard) paid for by tax dollars, socialist nation. If you're in a nation that has nationalized or localized delivery of services that are not paid for by users alone, you're in a socialist nation- the only question is how socialist. As I see it, we pay the military pay to protect the shipping lanes for our fuel needs which makes us very socialist. In a capitalist nation, the people supplying the oil would pay for their own defense force.

Putting this here because if details from this story come out I suspect they will be political. This type of terrorist attack has been predicted for quite some time.

This Monday, a press conference was held in Florida by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office detailing an alleged hack of a water treatment facility in the state, allowing hackers to change chemical levels which could make water unsafe to consume.

As Reuters' Chris Bing points out, multiple local government officials says that hackers were "very close to poisoning an entire town by breaching a water treatment facility."

At the outset of the press conference, Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said that the city of Oldsmar experienced an "unlawful intrusion" into its water treatment system, saying that the hacker's actions "showed up on the operator's screen with a mouse being moved about to open various software functions that control the water being treated in the system."
