6,000,000 got out of Wuhan. Old news. I posted that here 4 days ago. They know where they are by facial recognition although the 6 million figure was initially arrived at using phone data.

The infection rate is going to drop dramatically and that is good news. The bad news is they are now defining an infected person as having coronavirus AND pneumonia. Like having the two together. Don't bother to check the stats I already have. 17% of corona virus victims get pneumonia so the infection rate could drop by 80%. Madoff and Lou Pai (enron) will no doubt be watching.
Japan's MOH has confirmed 39 more positive cases, bring the total to 174 out of 492 people tested to so far. Testing has been reserved only for those showing symptoms and their close contacts.
A large percentage of the passengers are elderly, many with pre-existing medical conditions, which only adds to the difficulties in maintaining the quarantine for the full 14 days (Feb 19th). Close contacts of those that have recently fallen ill would presumably have their quarantines extended.

If Japan apparently does not have enough test kits to test all 3700 people confined on a cruise ship, how could a beleaguered country like China test 10s of thousands.

I'm sorry for the people involved in this, but... even with a more susceptible population on-board, at least the world will get a better idea of the numbers of both serious cases and deaths from this floating petri dish.

Not to worry. Our President has the solution:

"A lot of people think that goes away in April with the heat. As the heat comes in. Typically that will go away in April. We're in great shape, though."

From a FB past I got. It claims this was said at the Governor's meeting.

If you've got public schools paid for by taxpayers, you're in a socialist nation. If you have public roads paid for by taxpayers, socialist nation. If you've got public defense (police, fire, military, coast guard) paid for by tax dollars, socialist nation. If you're in a nation that has nationalized or localized delivery of services that are not paid for by users alone, you're in a socialist nation- the only question is how socialist. As I see it, we pay the military pay to protect the shipping lanes for our fuel needs which makes us very socialist. In a capitalist nation, the people supplying the oil would pay for their own defense force.

Does Trump have a sense of humour? Only the sort that Hitler did, I fear: the Führer laughed a lot, but only at anecdotes told him about other people's discomfiture, especially of his enemies or even potential enemies.

To put that into perspective: Michael, aged 96, is one of my best friends, who I visit at his home every Wednesday 1630-2100 to share an Indian takeaway, a bottle of wine and a chat about the Meaning of Life. He's a delightful person to be with, not in the least morose, bitter or pessimistic, and yet I have never once seen him smile or heard him laugh.

Nothing to see here, move along now...

If the most susceptible group is older individuals (for both Trump and the virus), perhaps a bunch of Faux viewers will be killed off before the next election.

Now if we can just get the evangelical idiots to think they can pray it away... while attending large Sunday gatherings. (I just read that of the 5 mini, mini clusters in Singapore, 2 were associated with churches... maybe there is a God.)

CDC director: More person-to-person coronavirus infections in U.S. likely, but containment still possible

By HELEN BRANSWELL @HelenBranswell
FEBRUARY 12, 2020

Health officials believe there is still opportunity to prevent widespread transmission of the coronavirus in the United States, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday, even as he warned that more human-to-human transmission here is likely.
“We’re still going to see new cases. We’re probably going to see human-to-human transmission within the United States,” Dr. Robert Redfield said in an interview with STAT.
He added that “at some point in time it is highly probable that we’ll have to transition to mitigation” as a public health strategy, using “social distancing measures” — for example, closure of certain public facilities — and other techniques to try to limit the number of people who become infected.

This evening, we have the first confirmation that a great many patients have been diagnosed clinically - based on patient symptoms, not on laboratory tests - and that those cases are now being added to the daily total.

In today's report, the Hubei Health Commission announces the addition of 14,840 new cases - a roughly 45% jump in the official case count over 24 hours ago. Additionally, the number of deaths reported by Hubei jumped by 248 - from 1062 fatalities to 1310.

Many of these newly included `clinical diagnosed' cases undoubtedly were identified days or even weeks ago, when a laboratory test was required to make a `confirmed' case. Despite this huge jump, there are likely many more cases in the province that have not been identified.

So they increased the denominator to mask the effective rise in fatality rates, as twice as many died yesterday. A few choice tidbits from SCMP.

The recriminations against local officials has begun.

Top officials in the Chinese province of Hubei—the heart of the coronavirus outbreak—have been fired by China’s communist government after another 15,000 cases of the deadly sickness were confirmed Thursday. The leadership of China’s Communist Party is trying to tighten its control of the coronavirus in the face of growing public anger about how the outbreak has been handled. The Washington Post reports Jiang Chaoliang, party secretary of Hubei province since 2016, has been fired. Ma Guoqiang, the party boss overseeing Wuhan, the city at the epicenter of the outbreak, has also been replaced. The total case numbers in Hubei province were revised upward by an additional 15,000 Thursday after the Chinese government loosened its definition of a confirmed case. The death tally also shot up by a further 242. The National Health Commission said Thursday the new total number of cases for the whole country is 59,804 with 1,367 deaths.

Can you elaborate? Singapore is as warm as they come, and has stringent border controls and the most effective health care system around. Yet the super spreader came from there, and they have a bunch of cases all over the country.
