"They tried that." The Supreme Court let him get away with it on defense appropriations where he made a "colorable" argument about the wall being defense related. It's unclear how far they'll let him take that game.

It all depends on whether they think it would work, to begin with. If it comes down to how many divisions John Roberts has, they'll find a way to approve it.

After that, it also depends on whether they're looking at having a few more hard-core Trumpistas on the Court. They might stall until then.

In Roberts' best-case scenario, Trump can do the dirty work until Roberts and the other six Republicans on the Court can reverse Reynolds v Sims in time for 2024.

Looks more and more as though, if they get the chance (doubtful), the Democrats should stack the court.

They could hold back money. Money talks, especially with Trump.
I would guarantee that if Dumpster starts any military action, the pressure on Congress to "fund the troops" will make most all of them cave. Besides that, it's usually REPLENISHMENT that needs to be funded. We have the supplies and logistics to start any war, but not necessarily to sustain it for long. Once you've put soldiers in theater, no Congress-critters are going to dry up their supply lines and strand them.

It's re-election suicide to do so with American troops.

True that they can't do that with combat underway. Could happen during the runup. But would take a veto proof majority which they don't have. . . yet.

Are you joking? Trump has shit on the troops multiple times. The things he done would have caused white hot meltdowns by the now MAGAt crowd if Obama had done them. (Remember the searing hatred because he saluted once with a coffee cup in his hand?) They've brushed off each and every one.

I was referring to suicide for House and Senator members who would try to cut off Dumpster's money for a war. He'd blame THEM for letting troops die, not that Fat Donny put them in the killing zone.

Move the combat-zone money from acquisitions. Or pay for combat with a surtax on capital gains.

Dream on...

I'm expecting that Dumpster won't actually care what's in the next budget, but just spend whatever he wants on things. Look at the "emergency" need for his vanity wall. His boss Vladimir isn't constrained by a budget, is he?

And which GOPers were saying that nothing was more patriotic during the Bush Iraq war than cutting taxes?

I think I already mentioned that. It's certainly where the Imperial Presidency is headed, but might be a bit premature in the next year.

I will grant that there's a very good chance of that happening after 2022 if he's reelected and keeps control of the Senate. We've been talking about banana republics, but that kind of borrow and spend is where they go if they decide they need to be popular with at least a large minority.

If you thought Trump had a (tiny, mushroom shaped) boner for a war with Iran before to take people's eyes off his incompetence well hang on to your hats. They're thumping their chests again because our troops were attacked with several killed in Iraq, a nation that has told us in no uncertain terms to get the f*** out.

Quote

US Defense Secretary Mark Esper warned Thursday “all options are on the table” a day after three US coalition members, including two US troops, were killed in a rocket attack in Iraq.

Esper told reporters President Donald Trump had given him “the authority to do what we need to do,” when they discussed the situation Wednesday night.

Esper blamed the attack — a barrage of rockets that struck the Taji air base, killing two US soldiers and a member of the British Royal Army Medical Corps — on Iranian-backed Shia militia groups.

“We have pretty good confidence we know who did this,” he said, insisting they were “clearly targeting coalition and partner forces on Camp Taji.”

General Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said 30 rockets were fired, 18 of which hit the base. Besides the three killed, another 14 coalition members were injured, five of whom were in serious condition, he said.

Within hours of the attack, an air strike killed more than two dozen Iran-aligned fighters in neighboring Syria.

Let me get this straight. We're attacked by Iraqi militia so we retaliate against insurgents in Syria because ... Iran. That's ... just ... great.

Trump is at it again.

President Donald Trump issued a bizarre threat against Iran — triggering confusion and alarm.

Congress curtailed the president’s war powers in February after he escalated tensions the month before with Iran, which like the United States is now grappling with the coronavirus pandemic.

Trump reignited tensions with a tweet Wednesday warning that “Iran or its proxies” were planning a “sneak attack” on U.S. troops or assets in Iraq, which Teheran had done in January in response to the drone strike killing of general Qasem Soleimani.
