Neat interactive map.

There are some REAL oddities in the mix, just in Flori-DUH alone. Light blue in the south = MIA Marlins, check. Dark blue in the central part of the state heading northward, TB Rays, check again. However, in North FL,...Marion, Alachua, Columbia, Gilchrist, & Dixie counties are all still Rays territory, whereas Levy and Bradford Counties favor... the Boston Red Sox? And Madison County swings toward...the Arizona Diamondbacks??? North of there, the loyalty swings, as one might expect, to the ATL Braves.

I wouldn't read too much into that. My guess is that you're starting to get into places where this company has had low ticket sales. And the Red Sox were recently in the World Series IIRC so that could have had an odd boost due to a localized slug of ticket sales.

My first thought ran to northeastern expats with $, particularly in Levy, although both are overwhelmingly rural. The AZ Diamondbacks for even more rural Madison Co. was what startled me...of course, that could be an “n” of one really wealthy and active ticket-buying D-back fan in a place that otherwise couldn’t care less about MLB.

I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time - when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers arc in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.

I’m wondering if one fan in a western state purchased a few tickets for a Red Sox game for his Boston vacation. Suddenly there’s a fan base in Iowa.

If you've got public schools paid for by taxpayers, you're in a socialist nation. If you have public roads paid for by taxpayers, socialist nation. If you've got public defense (police, fire, military, coast guard) paid for by tax dollars, socialist nation. If you're in a nation that has nationalized or localized delivery of services that are not paid for by users alone, you're in a socialist nation- the only question is how socialist. As I see it, we have the military pay to protecting the shipping lanes for our fuel needs which makes up very socialist. In a capitalist nation, the people supplying the oil would pay for their own defense force.

The South Florida-based sports wags might argue that the “MIA” designation in that sense (the team was originally the “Florida,” not “Miami”, Marlins) is completely accurate. :D
